Cable companies can breath a heavy sigh of relief, as the U.S. Supreme court handed down its verdict in the Brand X case on Monday.

In a 6-3 decision led by Justice Thomas, the court overturned a federal court decision that would force cable companies to share their infrastructure with Internet service providers, such as Brand X and Earthlink.

The decision will have no immediate impact on consumers, since it basically will keep regulation on cable companies the same as it has always been. But long term, ISP advocates believe it will lead to higher prices on broadband since they claim there will be less competition.
