Gift cards get dissed as lazy gifts, but as a CNET Money editor, I know their secret super powers. I'll explain those in a minute, but grabbing select cards now during Amazon Prime Day makes them an even better deal.

There are nearly two dozen gift cards that are 20% off right now, including for Regal Entertainment, Victoria's Secret, Gap, California Pizza Kitchen and even Candy Crush. And you don't need to do any deep product research to figure out how much you're saving when you snag a $50 card for $40.

So why am I such a fan of gift cards?

If you've skipped Prime Day so far because you don't really need any more stuff right now, I get it -- even if the excellent deals on electronics and appliances are tempting.

If you're like me and would prefer not buying more stuff that just ends up in a landfill, gift cards can be a great way to gift an experience as an alternative. I loved receiving a Spafinder gift card for a holiday gift last year that let me treat myself to a pedicure.

As a money editor, I appreciate that gift cards help me avoid the temptation of overspending on gifts. Plus, the Prime Day savings means I get to put a little extra money back in my budget. And unlike buying discounted cards on shady auction sites, you know you're getting legit cards loaded with the amounts they claim with this Prime Day deal.

Hey, did you know? CNET Deals texts are free, easy and save you money.

And finally, yeah, I'm a little lazy. But scooping up a half dozen gift cards now saves me from shopping for teacher gifts during the holidays and scrambling for last-minute gifts any time.

Why this deal matters

Finding legit gift cards at a discount means you know you're getting more value for your money. You can save up to 20% on dozens of gift cards right now with the Amazon Prime Day deal, but claims your favorites now, as they'll likely disappear sooner rather than later.
