The iPhone 17 in five colors against a pink gradient CNET background.
Apple/CNET

The iPhone 17 just hit shelves this September, and instantly impressed CNET reviewer Abrar Al-Heeti with its sharper camera, upgraded display and improved battery life. So it's no surprise that it has now dethroned its predecessor as CNET's top pick for the overall best phone of 2025.

But like the iPhone 16, the iPhone 17 doesn't come cheap, with a $799 starting price. Trading in your old phone can help put a dent in that, or you could just pick it up for free with this special T-Mobile offer.

Now, as you might expect, there are a couple requirements to take advantage of this deal. This offer is open to those who are switching their existing phone number over to T-Mobile. You'll then need to activate the number as a new line on either an Experience Beyond or Go5G Next plan and purchase the phone on an installment plan. You'll then get $830 back as bill credits over 24 months, so you're getting the 256GB model for free. Just note that there is a $35 one-time activation fee, plus applicable taxes, and you'll have to stay at T-Mobile for the full two years to get the entire discount.

Why this deal matters

There are quite a few deals on the iPhone 17 right now, but many of the bigger discounts require an eligible trade-in. If you don't have an old phone to exchange, this is one of the easiest ways to pick up the best phone of 2025 for less. Plus, T-Mobile's 24-month contract period is one year shorter than AT&T's and Verizon's.
