GoPro Hero on blue/red CNET Black Friday background
GoPro / CNET

The big sales event of the year is almost here. That's right, we're getting close to the beginning of Black Friday week and lots of retailers already getting in on the action. Like this GoPro Hero action camera, which has received its first-ever discount simultaneously across Amazon, Best Buy and the GoPro website. It might only be a $20 discount but it's a welcome one for a camera of this quality. So much so, that the GoPro Hero range features heavily in CNET's recommendations for best action cameras of 2024.

With a tiny design weighing 86 grams, this particular model is GoPro's smallest 4K camera with waterproof capabilities (up to 16 foot) and HyperSmooth video stabilization. The headline knowledge you need to know is that it offers 4K video quality, 12-megapixel photos as well as 8-megapixel photos when taken within a video. With built-in Enduro technology, the battery can provide up to 60 minutes of continuous recording time at its highest setting.

Hey, did you know? CNET Deals texts are free, easy and save you money.

The box itself comes with the Hero Camera, a curved adhesive mount, a mounting buckle, a thumb screw as well as a USB-C cable. Everything you need to document skiing down a frightening mountain, surfing across some high waves or even jumping out of a plane. One cool perk is that highlight videos are sent to your phone automatically, so once done you can immediately show your antics to friends and family.

Why this deal matters

We're highlighting this GoPro Hero deal as this is the first time this model has received any discount whatsoever. Launching in September this year, it's only taken two months for the asking price to drop from $200 to $180. A 10% discount might not seem huge but for a piece of tech that's only been on the market for barely a couple of months -- combined with all the high-quality specifications for video recording and taking images whenever on the move -- it's well worth thinking about.

Still too expensive? There are plenty of great tech gifts under the $100 mark now making their way to digital store shelves in the run-up to Christmas. Whether it's a Bose speaker, Solo smokeless fire pits, a Ninja Blast blender or some portable lighting for enjoying the outdoors on an evening.
