The iPhone 16E normally runs $600, but port your number to Metro, and you can grab it for just $100. It's not the newest iPhone on the block anymore, with the iPhone 17E hitting shelves, but that's exactly the point. Older generation models mean steeper discounts, and this one is hard to argue with. It also happens to be our top pick for an entry-level iPhone.

CNET reviewer Patrick Holland spent some time with the 16E and came away with solid impressions overall. Praising its battery, he said, "The iPhone 16E can definitely make it through a day on a single charge and, depending on how you use it, it'll likely make it through a day and a half before needing to be plugged in." He did note that at $600, it's not cheap, making a deal like this one well worth seeking out.

So how does the Metro deal work? You'll pay $100 upfront for the 128GB model and sign up for an eligible plan starting at $50 a month with AutoPay -- note that your first month comes in at $55. Stay active for three months, fill out a form and Metro sends you a $100 virtual prepaid Mastercard, bringing the total cost down to essentially nothing.

There are a few strings attached, as there always are. The prepaid Mastercard expires six months after you receive it and can't be redeemed for cash. An in-store activation fee of up to $25 may apply. Also, the offer is capped at two lines, and anyone currently with T-Mobile or who has been with Metro in the past 180 days won't qualify.

Why this deal matters

The 16E is a capable daily driver in its own right. Apple's A18 chip keeps things running smoothly, the rear camera handles most shooting scenarios well and the matte finish gives it a premium feel. It does most of what you'd want an iPhone to do -- just at a more manageable price.
