Samsung Odyssey G9 OLED.

Samsung/CNET

There are plenty of awesome Black Friday deals hitting the internet, but if you're hunting for a bargain on a small monitor from yesteryear, it could be time to just go for it and upgrade. Samsung has a few 32:9 super ultrawide monitors on sale during Black Friday. The one to get is 2023's Samsung Odyssey G9 OLED, on sale for $1,079, which is 40% off the retail price. That's a savings of $721 and the lowest price this monitor has ever been on Amazon (by $1).

It's a blazing-fast 240Hz gaming monitor with a deeply rich second-gen OLED display. Because it's OLED, the response times are near instantaneous at 0.03ms. And at a 5,120x1,440 resolution, it's like having two 1440p monitors side by side. Do note that you'll need a beefy gaming PC to run games at this resolution and frame rate, but for home office tasks, any computer will do. While Samsung does have a newer variant of this monitor (G95SD), which boasts a third-gen OLED panel and an antiglare coating, it's not worth paying an extra $1,000 for.

If the OLED variant is a bit out of your price range, there's a VA version that's on sale as well. The standard Samsung Odyssey G9 is on sale for $760, which is $540 off the retail price. This is the lowest price this monitor has had on Amazon. It boasts many specs similar to the OLED version, like a 32:9 aspect ratio, a 5,120x1,440 resolution and a 240Hz refresh rate. Because it's a VA panel, it sports deep black levels, just not as deep as those of an OLED display. Though Samsung advertises this monitor as having a 1ms response time, that's not the case. Reviews of past VA Samsung panels show a response time of 7.9ms, which is still insanely fast, just not as fast as OLED.

Why this deal matters

When super ultrawide 32:9 monitors were introduced, they were seen as inaccessibly expensive or too niche for average buyers. But as panel technology, especially OLED tech, has gotten cheaper, it's become more attainable. Given that more people are working from home, having access to more screen real estate makes managing multiple documents and emails easier.

Speaking from personal experience, after using a 32:9 monitor for the last few years, it's hard to go back. Having all my web pages and documents available all at once, with Slack windows to either side, makes me more productive. Plus, the fast response times on OLED have improved my Overwatch 2 gameplay.
