tablo 4th gen over the air dvr
Tablo/CNET

The cost of streaming services keeps rising. Looking for an alternative? Meet the fourth-gen Tablo.

This DVR streaming player normally starts at $100 for the two-tuner version or $140 for the four-tuner version. Right now, you can score a $20 discount on either version at Best Buy, which knocks the price down to $80 and $120, respectively. We don't expect this deal to last long, so you'll want to take advantage of it sooner rather than later.

The Tablo connects your TV antenna to your Wi-Fi so you can stream live broadcasts and free channels to your smart devices. Plus, you can watch, pause and record, making it a DVR for your whole home.

It also lets you record two channels, so you can come back and watch the show later. It's ideal for those who share a TV or anyone who just wants to watch a bunch of things at once.

The Tablo whole-home DVR is basically a cord-cutting DVR for free TV. You can connect it to your TV antenna and your Wi-Fi, then stream live broadcast channels on all your compatible smart devices. This includes the main channels like ABC, NBC, FOX and CBS, as well as over 100 free streaming channels. Channels and content are subject to availability in your area.

While using Tablo to stream to your smart TVs, streaming devices, phones and tablets, you can watch, pause and record up to two shows at once with the two-tuner option -- or four shows with the four-tuner model.

The Tablo has over 50 hours of built-in storage for recordings, which can expand up to 8TB with a USB hard drive if you want to save even more. Note that you must have internet and a compatible antenna for this device to work, and the antenna and USB hard drive for extra storage are sold separately.

All you need to do is download the free Tablo app on your TV or Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV or Google TV streaming device. You don't need to pay for a subscription, either.

Plus, it's super simple to set up. Plug in your antenna, connect to Wi-Fi, download the app, and you're good to go.

Why this deal matters

This device is a nice way to get live TV and DVR features without paying for expensive cable or streaming bundles. Multiple streaming platforms or cable itself can be very expensive these days. If you have an antenna, this is one of your most affordable options, starting at just $80. This deal won't last forever, so act fast if you're interested.Â
