Memory foam isn’t for everyone

Amerisleep has always made solid mattresses and had a unique lineup with five beds: the AS1, AS2, AS3, AS4 and AS5. The AS1 mattress is a firm memory foam option at an affordable price, the AS3 mattress is a memory foam mattress with a medium profile that is the most popular, and the AS5 is a very plush, soft memory foam bed.

The original AS1-5 beds are all pretty similar -- the fundamental differences are simply the price and the amount of material that impacts the firmness profile. Still, the new AS6 Black Series mattress is completely different. It has a super sleek look, a responsive memory foam feel, multiple firmness options and some strong cooling features. It is one of the best luxury memory foam beds I have tested to date.

The multi-tone black exterior gives it a premium look, and the moment we unboxed it, I wanted to lay down on it. The cover not only looks cool but feels cool and I could immediately tell this was going to be a strong contender for a slot on our Best Cooling Mattresses list.

I also found it immediately comfortable. The AS6 Black Series maintains a similar feel to the other Amerisleep beds, which is noticeably responsive memory foam that can give some sleepers the best of both worlds.

Is the Amerisleep AS6 Black Series mattress right for you?

Anyone looking for a noticeably luxurious memory foam hybrid should be interested in the AS6 Black Series. It is comparable to top memory foam beds such as the Tempur-Pedic Pro Adapt, Leesa Reserve Hybrid and Saatva Contour5. You will need a pretty big budget to be able to afford the AS6 Black -- but if you have the funds for it, I think you will find it worth the cost.

Amerisleep AS6 Black Series mattress firmness and feel

Amerisleep AS6 feel

The feel of the AS6 Black can be generally described as memory foam, but there is a little bit more going on. You will notice the sink-in, body-conforming memory quality on the AS6 immediately, more quickly than a bed like Tempur-Pedic (which I currently sleep on). The memory foam layers in the AS6 Black are more responsive than a traditional memory foam style. Traditional memory foam returns to its original shape slowly when pressure is removed, which means it is "slow to respond."

Some memory foam beds, like Layla and the other beds from Amerisleep, feature a more responsive feel, which means you get the body-conforming quality that memory foam is known for. However, if you try to rotate between sleeping positions, the bed moves with you a little bit more and you'll encounter less resistance from the bed.

The Tempur-Pedic mattress I currently sleep on has a traditional slow-to-respond feel, and I have found this to be a positive feature. Because of the resistance, I get in one comfortable position and usually stay in the same spot most of the night. However, not everyone agrees that this is a positive feature and people sometimes feel "stuck" in a mattress that uses slow-to-respond memory foam.

The feel of the AS6 Black can provide sleepers with the best of both: a sink-in, body-conforming memory foam feel without the potential for the "stuck" feeling. I find the AS6 Black to be incredibly comfortable but I also enjoy memory foam. If you don't enjoy memory foam, even though the AS6 Black is more responsive, it's still probably not for you and I would recommend a more neutral-feeling mattress.

Amerisleep AS6 Black firmness and sleeper types

Another way the Amerisleep AS6 Black Series is different from the previous Amerisleep models is that it is available in multiple firmness options. The AS1-AS5 beds are all different based on firmness and price. If you wanted a firm bed, you'd have to choose the AS1 or AS2; if you wanted something soft, you'd probably choose the AS5.

The AS6 Black Series is available in a "plush-soft," "luxury-firm" and "firm" model. We tested the luxury-firm model and found it to be a flat medium on our firmness scale, which means it should work well for back, stomach, side and combination sleepers.

amerisleep-as6-mattress-2024-sleepers-op-3.jpg
Owen Poole/CNET

Our Mattress Smasher 9000 gave the luxury-firm model of the AS6 Black a 4.5 out of 10, which is in the medium range.

Based on information available from Amerisleep and similar beds with multiple firmness options, we would estimate the firm model to be between a 7 and 8 out of 10, which is ideal for back and stomach sleepers. We would estimate the plush-soft model to be in the 2-3 out of 10 range, which is ideal for side sleepers looking for maximum pressure relief.

Having multiple firmness options for one mattress where the cost doesn't change is a good feature because you can really pick and choose your firmness profile.

Amerisleep AS6 Black Series mattress construction

The AS6 Black Series is a hybrid mattress with no foam option. This is another area where it is different from the other Amerisleep beds, which are predominantly foam with a few coil options.

Like most luxurious mattresses, the AS6 Black Series is tall, roughly 15 inches in height, and has several different layers.

The bottommost is a layer of encased coils that provides support. Above that is a layer of transition foam, which Amerisleep calls the "Affinity Layer" -- this is here to provide a buffer between the coils and the comfort foams above.

The next layer is "BioPur" memory foam, which is the main comfort layer on the other Amerisleep mattresses. The top comfort layer on the AS6 Black is another layer of memory foam they call the "TitanAir Layer," which is said to be infused with titanium to aid in temperature regulation.

The mattress is wrapped in a cooling cover that is removable and rather easy to zip off. I have found that being able to remove the cooling cover is nice because it can blunt the cooling factor a bit, which might not always be welcome in the winter months.

Amerisleep AS6 Black Series mattress performance

Edge support

Beds with poor edge support make you feel like you're going to roll off the mattress near the outer edge and it is easy to sleep near the perimeter of the edge if you are sharing a bed with a partner or pets.

amerisleep-as6-mattress-2024-edgesupport-op.jpg
Owen Poole/CNET

The edge support on the AS6 Black is good, but not as good as I expected. Most high-end luxury beds feature some kind of edge support enhancement in the form of dense foam or perimeter coils made with thick gauge steel. I couldn't find any reference to this from Amerisleep, and it definitely didn't feel like the edge support was improved in any specific way -- but I don't think you'll have issues with the edge support on this bed.

Motion isolation

Motion isolation refers to how well the bed deadens the impact of movement on the mattress. Good motion isolation is especially important if you are a light sleeper who shares a mattress with someone who tosses and turns a lot.

The motion isolation performance is excellent on the AS6 Black Series, especially for a hybrid. We consistently notice that beds made of only foam layers perform better, but even though this bed uses coils for support I think light sleepers will be good to go on this bed.

Temperature regulation

One of the first things we noticed about the AS6 Black Series is just how powerful the cooling "CryoCool" cover on this mattress is and I think it will be excellent for hot sleepers and will probably have a spot on our Best Cooling Mattress list.

I currently sleep on the Tempur-Pedic Pro Breeze mattress, which has excellent temperature regulation. I think the AS6 Black Series is in the same conversation with its cooling properties.

Amerisleep AS6 Black Series mattress pricing

SizeMeasurements (inches)Price
Twin 38x75$3,339
Twin XL 38x80$3,449
Full 54x75$3,599
Queen 60x80$3,649
King 76x80$3,849
Cal king 72x84$3,849

The Amerisleep AS6 Black Series' price point is definitely in the "luxury tier," which we usually categorize as beds priced at $2,000 or more.

The retail price is similar to that of the Tempur-Pedic Pro Adapt mattress, the Saatva Contour5 and the Leesa Reserve Hybrid, which are all premium, luxurious memory foam beds.

As of this writing, the Amerisleep AS6 has a significant discount of $1,000, which brings it down to a more reasonable $2,649 for a queen-size. Whether that price tag is worth it is a difficult question to answer but I do think it is competitively priced compared to the competition.

Amerisleep mattress policies

Free shipping

Like most online mattresses, the AS6 Black will ship right to your door at no extra cost inside a large box in the contiguous United States. Outside the US or in Alaska or Hawaii, you will have to pay for a "freight forwarder" to get this bed shipped to you.

Unboxing this particular mattress is not easy because it is quite heavy so you should definitely have a friend there to help you get it out of the box.

100-night trial

Amerisleep provides a standard 100-night in-home sleep trial with all of its beds. Keep in mind that your sleep trial begins the day you receive the mattress so make sure you get it unboxed as quickly as you can and start sleeping on it because it can take up to 30 nights for your body to adjust to a new bed.

Return policy

Within the 100-night trial period, but not before night 30, you can return the Amerisleep AS6 Black Series and get a full refund with no additional cost, which makes purchasing the mattress virtually risk-free.

Warranty

The AS6 Black Series is backed by a 20-year warranty, which exceeds the standard 10-year warranty. This covers manufacturer defects and if your mattress develops sagging beyond normal wear and tear, you should be covered.

How does the Amerisleep AS6 Black Series mattress compare to similar mattresses?

AS6 Black vs. Leesa Reserve Hybrid

The Leesa Reserve Hybrid is very similar to the AS6 Black Series in almost every way. Both beds have a memory foam feel, both use coils for support, both are available in three firmness options, both have cooling covers and both are priced similarly before and after discounts. It is actually difficult to differentiate between the two and I think both are excellent beds. The biggest tangible difference between the two is the style of memory foam. The AS6 Black Series has a bit more responsiveness compared to the Reserve Hybrid but it is a subtle difference.

AS6 Black vs. Tempur-Pedic ProAdapt

The ProAdapt mattress is probably the most versatile mattress in the Tempur-Pedic lineup. It is available in soft, medium and firm models with the medium model also available with coils. It also has a memory foam feel but it is the traditional, dense variety of memory foam and not the more responsive style on the AS6 Black.

Both beds also have cooling covers and are in the same price range but the cooling factor is stronger on the AS6 Black. If you want the best cooling features available from Tempur-Pedic you'll have to spend up for either the Pro Breeze or Luxe Breeze models.

Final thoughts on the Amerisleep AS6 Black Series mattress

I think Amerisleep really nailed the design on the AS6 Black Series. The brand wanted to make a luxurious memory foam bed that could compete with top brands Leesa, Saatva and Tempur-Pedic and I say "mission accomplished."

It is very comfortable for those who enjoy the feel of memory foam, and because it doesn't have a traditional type of memory foam feel it might work for people who don't love memory foam, too. It has great features for hot sleepers to help them sleep cooler and it has multiple firmness options available so it should work for every sleeper type.

amerisleep-as6-mattress-2024-op.jpg
Owen Poole/CNET

I see this mattress having a slot on multiple best lists for its comfort, quality and cooling features with the only caveat being price. It has a relatively high price point but when compared to competing mattresses it fits right into the "luxury" range. If you have the budget for a luxury mattress, I think you'll really like the AS6 Black.

You might like the Amerisleep AS6 Black Series mattress if:

  • You want a memory foam feel
  • You want to choose your firmness level
  • You want a coil mattress
  • You are a hot sleeper

You might not like the Amerisleep AS6 Black Series mattress if:

  • You prefer a foam bed
  • You are shopping on a budget
  • You strongly dislike memory foam

Other mattresses from Amerisleep

Amerisleep AS3: This is Amerisleep's most popular mattress because it sits right in the middle of its AS1-5 lineup in terms of firmness. It should work fairly well for all sleeping positions. It is available in a coil model and a foam model. It now has a cooling cover added at no extra cost. We haven't been able to test this new cooling cover on the AS3 yet but I doubt it will be comparably cool to the AS6 Black Series.

Amerisleep AS5:The Amerisleep AS5 is very similar to the AS3. It has the same type of memory foam feel, the same cooling cover and it is available in a foam model and a coil model. The key difference is that it simply has more comfort foam, which makes the mattress very plush. It is the softest bed in the AS1-5 lineup.
