The average online mattress is pretty expensive -- between $800 and $1,200 for a queen. The reality is that most people can’t afford to drop that much on their next bed. But that doesn’t mean your sleep has to suffer. If you’re like me, who frequently browses Amazon for my essentials, you’re probably curious about the beds you see there. Are they any good? Would my back break if I tried to sleep on one? Our team of sleep experts used our years of expertise testing and reviewing beds to round up the best cheap mattresses on Amazon under $500.

How we sort our mattresses
Filter by

Our sleep team was surprised to see the $110 price tag on the queen-size Rolanstar Mattress. For being such an affordable bed, it doesn't feel cheap like some of the other lower-priced mattresses we have tested.

Pros

  • Affordable price point at $110 for a queen
  • Three height options
  • Foams are CertiPur-US certified

Cons

  • Not as supportive as a hybrid bed
  • No cooling technology for hot sleepers
  • Only one firmness option

Our sleep team was immediately impressed by the Tuft & Needle Kin mattress -- it's essentially a much more affordable alternative to the brand's Original mattress without sacrificing as much as you might think.

Pros

  • Responsive, neutral feel that most sleepers will enjoy
  • Three height options
  • Foams are CertiPur-US certified
  • From a reputable American brand

Cons

  • Not as supportive as a hybrid bed
  • Expensive compared to other Amazon mattresses
  • Only one firmness option

If you’re looking for a more supportive coil mattress and you’re also on a tight budget, the Siena Hybrid could be the bed you’ve been dreaming of. While other queen-size hybrid beds online are priced well over $1,000, you can pick this one up for just shy of $500 -- half the price.

Pros

  • Affordable price point for a hybrid bed
  • Three height options
  • Generous trial period for an Amazon option

Cons

  • Not for those looking for a foam mattress
  • No cooling technology for hot sleepers
  • Only one height profile, no queen size

On Amazon, cheap innerspring beds are everywhere, but the Signature Design Chime mattress stands out to our team as a quality option with a true pillow-top feel.

Pros

  • PIllow-top design
  • Supportive coils
  • From a reputable brand

Cons

  • Not ideal for light sleepers
  • Confusing store page
  • Only one firmness option

Most people sleep hot, but not all have the money for a fancy bed with cooling technology. There are a few noteworthy contenders for this type of mattress on Amazon, but the Sweetnight CoolNest is our top recommendation -- and get this: it’s only $470 for a queen size.

Pros

  • Affordable price point for a hybrid bed at
  • Three height options
  • Cooling technology for hot sleepers

Cons

  • Not for those wanting a thinner foam mattress
  • Not for those looking for a neutral mattress
  • Not as supportive as a hybrid mattress
6.9/10 CNET Score

  • Four height options to choose from
  • Firmness options

Zinus is a longstanding Amazon brand that makes many different home products, including bed frames and mattresses. The Green Tea mattress is its classic memory foam bed, and if you’re looking for a “Tempur-Pedic-” type of feel on a super-thin budget, this is your best bet.

Pros

  • Super affordable
  • Five height options to choose from
  • Dense memory foam feel
  • Great motion isolation

Cons

  • Not as supportive as a hybrid bed
  • Won’t be as durable as a hybrid

Our sleep team was surprised to see the $110 price tag on the queen-size Rolanstar Mattress. For being such an affordable bed, it doesn't feel cheap like some of the other lower-priced mattresses we have tested.

Why we chose this bed: The Rolanstar from Amazon has three height options: 6-inch, 8-inch and 10-inch. Its medium-to-medium-firm profile can suit most sleeper types, especially combination.

This simple mattress features a 6-inch layer of support foam as the foundation, topped with a 2-inch layer of what the brand calls bamboo charcoal foam (this ratio will vary depending on the height profile you choose). We found this gives the mattress an overall responsive memory foam feel -- you'll slowly sink into the layers as they conform around your curves, but it springs back into shape a little quicker than traditionally dense memory foam.

The all-foam construction provides decent motion isolation, so you shouldn't feel your partner moving around too much if they toss and turn at night. The charcoal foam is intended to wick away moisture, and the fabric cover is designed to be breathable, but we would not say this bed is cooling. It sleeps more temperature-neutral and may still heat up a bit for some hot sleepers.

Who should get this bed: The Rolanstar is a great option if you're looking for an affordable bed with a responsive memory foam feel. Its medium to medium-firm profile is particularly great for combination sleepers. It's also ideal if you're looking for a cheaper mattress for your guest room or even an RV or camper (depending on the size you need).

Who shouldn't: Strict side sleepers looking for something plush and pressure-relieving may find this bed slightly too firm. It's also not the best option for heavier individuals or couples looking for a super supportive, durable, long-lasting mattress.

Our sleep team was immediately impressed by the Tuft & Needle Kin mattress -- it's essentially a much more affordable alternative to the brand's Original mattress without sacrificing as much as you might think.

Why we chose this bed: Tuft & Needle is a super reputable online mattress brand, and the Kin mattress is its Amazon-exclusive offering. You’ll get the same accommodating, comfy feel on the Kin mattress that you’d get if you spent up for the more expensive beds from Tuft & Needle.

This bed is available in several height profiles: a 6-inch, an 8-inch and a 10-inch. The 8-inch model features 6 inches of support foam and 2 inches of “T&N Adaptive” foam, the same type found in the Tuft & Needle Original mattress. This spongy and springy foam moves with you, making it feel distinct from traditional memory foam that some sleepers don’t enjoy.

Compared to other affordable beds from Amazon, the cover on the Kin mattress feels more premium. It is very soft and breathable, while others we tested did not feel as nice.

This bed's motion isolation is excellent, which is great news for couples who might be sharing the Kin mattress. The edge support isn’t bad for a thinner foam bed.

Who should get this bed: Anyone looking for a comfortable and affordable foam mattress should consider the Kin. Its motion isolation and edge support performance, plus its accommodating feel and slightly firmer than medium firmness profile, should make it an excellent option for couples and individuals.

Who shouldn't: This is not for you if you’re on a razor-thin budget. At $499 for the 8-inch queen, this bed is affordable, especially compared to other Tuft & Needle mattresses -- but in the grand scheme of beds on Amazon, it is on the more expensive side. Also, heavier individuals in need of a more supportive coil mattress should look elsewhere.

If you’re looking for a more supportive coil mattress and you’re also on a tight budget, the Siena Hybrid could be the bed you’ve been dreaming of. While other queen-size hybrid beds online are priced well over $1,000, you can pick this one up for just shy of $500 -- half the price.

Why we chose this bed: This 10-inch mattress is available on Amazon in three firmness levels: plush, medium and firm. This makes the bed versatile enough to accommodate all sleepers, regardless of preference or body type.

While tons of Amazon hybrid beds are just a layer of support coils with a single comfort foam, the Siena Hybrid amps things up with reinforced coils along its edges and an additional transitional layer to give the bed more pressure relief.

Its responsive memory foam on top gives the bed a slight sink-in quality, but overall, it has a more neutral hybrid feel. That memory foam, however, provides a good amount of motion isolation, and the bed’s perimeter feels sturdier than other Amazon beds we’ve tested.

Who should get this bed: The Siena Hybrid should work if you're looking for a more affordable hybrid mattress with a hint of memory foam mixed in. Since the medium option is slightly softer than a medium-firm, it’ll primarily work best for back and stomach sleepers.

Who shouldn't: If you mainly sleep on your sides throughout the night, I would steer you toward a more pressure-relieving style of bed. Luckily, the bed is available in a “plush” version to help accommodate that preference a bit more.

On Amazon, cheap innerspring beds are everywhere, but the Signature Design Chime mattress stands out to our team as a quality option with a true pillow-top feel.

Why we chose this bed: This is the only Amazon mattress we tested that I would describe as a “pillow top.” Many beds have a pillow top look, but they don't have enough foam to provide that plush and fluffy feel sleepers love. The Chime mattress has more foam than its competitors. It doesn’t feel quite as luxurious as the high-end pillow top beds we’ve tested, but it can be forgiven, given the price.

It also has solid edge support, but only OK motion isolation. Still, it stands out among the competition in both categories at this price point.

This hybrid mattress has an accommodating firmness profile that should work decently well for all sleepers. We rank this bed as a true medium firmness level, which is especially great for couples and combination sleepers.

We specifically recommend the Chime 12-inch model of the Signature Design. The Amazon store page for this mattress has eight different height profile options, but each height profile is a different bed altogether -- not the same bed with different thicknesses, like most other brands.

Who should get this bed: The Signature Design Chime mattress is a great choice if you're looking for an affordable coil mattress with a more luxurious feel. It is solidly built and stands out from other affordable beds in terms of its feel and performance. At only $370 for a queen-size, you are getting a lot of bang for your buck.

Who shouldn't: If you are sharing this mattress with a partner and you are a light sleeper, I would recommend an all-foam bed instead. The Chime mattress has decent motion isolation to help light sleepers stay asleep throughout the night, but compared to more expensive hybrid beds, it doesn’t quite stack up.

Most people sleep hot, but not all have the money for a fancy bed with cooling technology. There are a few noteworthy contenders for this type of mattress on Amazon, but the Sweetnight CoolNest is our top recommendation -- and get this: it’s only $470 for a queen size.

Why we chose this bed: This mattress is available in three different height profiles, with 12, 14 and 16-inch models to choose from. We tested the 14-inch version, and it’s a reasonably substantial all-foam mattress.

It’s six layers deep and has a five-zone ergonomic support design on the bottom. This provides enhanced lumbar support for your back and more pressure relief for your hips, shoulders, legs and feet. Additionally, it uses transitional layers of memory foam to give it more of a viscous feel, with an open-cell foam on top to help with overall breathability.

Speaking of that, the main selling point of this bed is its cooling. We noticed its cover is noticeably cool to the touch, so it should help cool most sleepers down at night or at least be temperature-neutral.

Who should get this bed: Since the bed is around a true medium on the firmness scale, we think it will work well for most sleeping preferences. If you sleep on the warmer side, it should also sleep a lot cooler than other Amazon mattresses.

Who shouldn't: Any way you cut it, you get a thick and hefty mattress by going this route. If you want a more portable style of mattress, it may be worth looking into another bed. If you go with the 16-inch height profile, I’d recommend investing in deep-pocket sheets.

The AmazonBasics branding is on hundreds of products on Amazon.com -- even mattresses. While you’re not going to find this particular bed during your next hotel stay, it's a surprisingly good value if you're willing to make a few compromises.

Why we chose this bed: The AmazonBasics Memory Foam bed is as affordable as you would expect, with the 6-inch queen-size mattress costing only $192.48. It's available in four heights with 6-, 8-, 10- and 12-inch models. The combination of memory foam and convoluted egg-crate foam gives the mattress a pretty accommodating, responsive memory foam feel.

In general, the sleep team was surprised that a mattress this cheap could be this comfy. It excels at isolating cross-mattress motion, which is great for couples

It's also available in two different firmness options: a “medium-firm” and a “plush.” I recommend side sleepers get the plush model; people with other sleep positions should get the medium-firm model, although the height profile will have more of an impact on firmness; the thicker the bed, the softer it will be.

Who should get this bed: Anyone looking for a mattress on a very tight budget should consider the AmazonBasics Memory Foam mattress. It's among the most affordable beds we’ve ever tested, and I think most people will find it plenty comfortable. Thanks to its height profiles and firmness options, it is also versatile for different sleeping positions.

Who shouldn't: We did observe some temperature issues with this mattress, and hot sleepers might have a tough time with night sweats. Cheaper foams are less breathable than more expensive ones. This bed is also only backed by a one-year warranty instead of the standard 10-year warranty for more expensive beds, which means durability will be a concern.

Zinus is a longstanding Amazon brand that makes many different home products, including bed frames and mattresses. The Green Tea mattress is its classic memory foam bed, and if you’re looking for a “Tempur-Pedic-” type of feel on a super-thin budget, this is your best bet.

Why we chose this bed: Zinus has been around a long time, and with Amazon-centric brands, we've noticed many come and go over the years, so we trust Zinus. Plus, unlike other Amazon beds, this bed is backed by a 10-year warranty. The Green Tea Mattress has a very traditional, dense memory foam feel. You'll sink into the top layer of foam, which will conform to your body’s shape. Many sleepers seek this type of feel because it provides cradling support and can deter you from tossing and turning.

It comes in multiple height profiles that impact the firmness profile. We previously tested the 12-inch model, which was very soft. The 8-inch model we most recently tested is medium-firm.

The Green Tea Mattress is a very affordable bed. A queen-size bed in the 8-inch height profile retails for only $229 at the time of writing.

Who should get this bed: Anyone looking for a mattress with a traditional memory foam feel should check out the Green Tea mattress. It has the same variety of feel as more expensive beds like the Nectar Classic, Bear Original and even Tempur-Pedic. The Green Tea can’t compete with those more expensive options in other categories, but if you love memory foam and are on a tight budget, this bed should be perfect.

Who shouldn't: The Green Tea mattress is one of the warmest-sleeping beds we’ve tested. The thicker, softer options like the 12- and the 10-inch will impact temperature more, but hot sleepers might have a rough time on this bed. Also, if you dislike or are unsure about a traditional memory foam bed, I would look elsewhere.

Other mattresses we’ve tested

Over the years, we’ve tested plenty of mattresses on Amazon and elsewhere. During the process of compiling this list, we tested several other Amazon beds that didn’t make the list, though many of them are solid beds. Remember that these are cheap beds, so they aren’t going to have all the features and additional comfort elements that other beds have, but that doesn’t mean you won’t sleep well on them.

  • Mubulily Mattress 10: This budget bed on Amazon has a coil base for support and layers of memory foam for comfort. I think people will generally agree it’s a comfortable bed. A queen will cost you around $300, which is a great price for a queen. It’s available in an 8, 10 and 12-inch model.
  • Addnuss Mattress: People looking for a classic quilted-top mattress might like the Addnuss mattress on Amazon. It’s available in three heights: 10, 12 and 14 inches. The 10-inch model is only $170 for a queen.
  • Rimensy Mattress 10: This bed combines high-density foam with individually wrapped coils. A 12-inch model costs $250 on Amazon, though I’ve seen the price drop under $200.
  • Coolvie Pure Comfort: This one is a little more expensive than the other beds in this section, though the Coolvie Pure Comfort mattress is still what I’d call a budget bed. At $410 for a queen, this is a solid hybrid mattress for people on a budget.

What to consider when buying a cheap mattress on Amazon

There are a ton of cheap beds on Amazon, but that doesn’t mean all of them will suit your needs. To narrow down the best beds for you, we’ve outlined a few key points to remember to narrow down the best beds for you.

Sleeping position

Your sleeping position is the first and arguably most important factor when shopping. This will determine what part of the firmness scale your next bed should fall on.

  • Side sleepers need a mattress that’s on the softer side, allowing their shoulders and hips to sink in rather than creating painful pressure points. We recommend a mattress around a medium (5) or below.
  • Back and stomach sleepers need a firm, supportive bed to ensure their spine stays in neutral alignment. If it’s too soft, your hips and shoulders could sink in unevenly, resulting in back pain. I recommend a medium to medium-firm bed (6) and up.
  • Combination sleepers have the most freedom. Though I recommend you either shoot for the middle of the scale or choose based on the position you spend the most time in.

Remember, your sleeping position will just get you in a ballpark range. The rest comes down to your personal preference. For instance, stomach sleepers need a firmer bed, though if you have breasts, you might find that extra-firm mattresses cause discomfort. So you’d go down the firmness scale a little to accommodate this.

Body type

Your body type is the next thing that will influence which Amazon bed you should choose. It does so in two ways: construction and how you’ll experience a bed.

For construction, I recommend that people on the heavier side choose hybrid beds. The supportive coil layer means the bed will stand up against the test of time a little better.

Firmness is determined for each bed with the average body type in mind. But if you fall below or above that, you might experience a bed a little differently. It won’t be a huge change, though it will be firmer or softer based on how much you weigh. Heavier body types put more pressure on a bed, so it feels softer to them. Petite individuals put less, so it will feel firmer. Keeping your body type in mind will help you narrow down how firm you want your next bed to be.

Trial and warranty

Most mattress brands offer a trial and warranty, which are essential for online shopping. The average trial is 100 nights, and the average warranty is 10 years. However, since you’re shopping through Amazon, it’s essential to ensure the mattress you’re ordering has a trial and warranty. Or if not, that you’re comfortable taking the risk of not liking the bed.

Reviews

Amazon reviews are one of the most powerful resources we have when shopping. Just like you’d check the reviews before you bought running shoes or shorts, it’s important to check the reviews before you buy an Amazon bed. Reviews will help you gauge if you’ll like the feel and firmness of a bed. As well as flag any concerns like sagging foams or split seams over time.

How we tested the best cheap Amazon mattresses

CNET’s team of sleep experts has been testing and reviewing mattresses for years. At this point, we’ve collectively tested over 300 beds. During that time, we’ve established a testing process that every bed goes through in our 6,000-square-foot mattress warehouse in Reno, Nevada. We’ve got two mock bedrooms where our hands-on testing process happens, and a space where our Mattress Smasher 9000 rates each bed.

Our testing process involves everyone in the office to ensure every perspective, body type and gender is represented. For some factors, like durability, we use our years of experience to estimate based on what the bed is made of. However, key factors in our process allow us to objectively compare beds to each other.

Firmness

Our firmness testing process has two parts: subjective and objective. The subjective firmness score we give each bed comes from our team’s experience lying on the bed in different positions. We note how supportive or soft a bed feels and whether any positions are uncomfortable.

Our objective mattress testing involves the Mattress Smasher 9000, a proprietary device designed by the CNET labs team. The MS9K presses down on each bed with the force of a 160-pound person and objective rates the firmness. We then compile the data. For firmness, we always test the mattress ourselves before the MS9K can rate it. That way, our experience isn’t clouded by the data. That’s the thing about mattress testing: It’s nice to have objective numbers, but the subjectivity is how we help you find the right bed.

Motion isolation

Think of motion isolation as how well a bed dampens movement across the surface. This is significant for people who sleep with pets or have a different sleep schedule than their partner. Memory foam tends to perform well in motion isolation, while some hybrids have more bounce, lowering their score.

To test motion isolation, we do two things. First, a team member lies on the bed and closes their eyes. Then another person will move around on the bed to simulate cosleeping. How much movement is felt is recorded. The second way we test motion isolation is the water glass test. We set a glass on the edge of the bed and roll toward and away from it, making sure to note how much the water moves around. The bed doesn’t have good motion isolation if it sloshes or tips over.

Edge support

Edge support, or the strength of the bed’s perimeter, is essential for couples who need access to the whole sleeping space. It’s also crucial for those with mobility issues who have trouble getting in and out of bed.

To test edge support, we sit and lie on the edge of the bed and measure how much the edge caves in under our weight. If it feels like we might roll off, the bed receives a low score. Traditionally, hybrids perform the best in this area.

Temperature

Temperature is one of the biggest selling points in the mattress industry. Unfortunately, there are no regulations or requirements that a brand has to meet before it can claim to cool you at night. We use our knowledge and hands-on experience to help you determine what’s real and what’s marketing.

Our testing rooms are temperature-controlled, and we test beds without sheets to get the clearest picture of how well a bed regulates temperature.

Best cheap Amazon mattresses FAQs

What’s the best cheap mattress on Amazon?

There are a ton of cheap beds out there. Some of our top picks for the best cheap mattresses on Amazon are:

  • Rolanstar
  • Tuft & Needle Kin
  • Siena Hybrid
  • Ashley Home Signature
  • Sweetnight CoolNest

Is it good to buy a mattress from Amazon?

Yes, Amazon is a good place to buy a mattress if you want quick shipping. However, it’s important to thoroughly vet the quality of a mattress through the reviews before you buy. There are a ton of cheap beds on Amazon, and not all of them are worth your money.

How do you return a mattress on Amazon?

Returns can be confusing when you go through a website like Amazon. You can request a refund up to 30 days from purchase. Depending on whether it’s opened, you might be told to keep it, return it or donate it. Things might vary if you buy through a third party on Amazon. That’s why checking the trial and warranty information before you buy is essential.

Are budget beds worth it?

Like most things, price isn’t always the best indicator of quality. I’ve liked many of the cheap beds I’ve tested over some luxury-priced ones that seem too expensive for what they offer. Budget beds probably won’t have all the bells and whistles like zoned support or cooling covers that more expensive beds have. So keep your expectations realistic.
