It might be hard to believe, but sleeping on a cloud-like soft mattress isn't for everyone. If you're a back or stomach sleeper and you want a bed that's more supportive than the group chat with your friends, consider an extra-firm mattress. A firm profile can prevent your midsection from sagging into the bed as you sleep on your back or stomach, promoting healthy spinal alignment. A firmer mattress can also benefit plus-size individuals and couples who need extra support.

7.8/10 CNET Score

Our take: It's called Plank Firm for a reason -- this flippable mattress has a firm and extra-firm side, each offering a flat and responsive foam feel. Our Mattress Smasher rated the firm side 8.7 out of 10 on the firmness scale and the extra-firm side at a stiff 9.8 out of 10. It's within the top five firmest beds our team has tested.

Pros

  • Dual-sided with two firmnesses
  • Extremely supportive for back sleepers
  • Good price point
  • Option to add GlacioTex Cooling Cover

Cons

  • Not suited for side sleepers
  • Not for those wanting a hybrid mattress
8.5/10 CNET Score

Our take: We recommend Avocado Green for back and stomach sleepers seeking a supportive organic mattress. This bed has a responsive yet firm latex foam feel, and our Mattress Smasher rated it 8.6 out of 10 on the firmness scale. Avocado is an eco-friendly brand that frequently appears on our mattress best lists due to its high-quality natural materials, such as GOLS-certified organic latex and GOTS-certified organic wool and cotton.

Pros

  • Organic and natural materials
  • Solid edge support
  • Backed by the ACA
  • Firm and supportive for back and stomach sleepers

Cons

  • Might be too firm for light individuals
  • Not suitable for side sleepers
9.3/10 CNET Score

Our take: Our CNET sleep team loves the Saatva Classic, which is why we also chose it as the best firm mattress overall. The most popular model is the luxury firm, but this mattress is also available in a firm version -- and it's one of the firmest beds we've ever slept on. This bed's feel is a mix of luxurious pillow-top with traditional innerspring, making it responsive yet neutral and accommodating. If you're looking for a high-quality bed that will provide tons of lumbar support for your chronic back pain, this is it.

Pros

  • Multiple coil layers for extra support
  • Three firmness levels and two height options
  • Patented Lumbar Zone technology
  • Free white glove delivery

Cons

  • Firm model is not suited for side sleepers
  • Not much give or pressure relief
9.3/10 CNET Score

Our take: If you're looking for a firm, luxurious hybrid mattress with a cloud-like pillow top feel, the Helix Plus Elite is your answer. "The Elite lineup of beds from Helix are some of the nicest beds you can buy online. With that in mind, I think the price (after discounts) is reasonable for how luxurious it is," said Dillon Lopez, CNET senior video producer.

Pros

  • Luxurious pillow top feel
  • Great for heavier individuals and couples
  • Lumbar support for back and stomach sleepers
  • Cooling cover for hot sleepers

Cons

  • Ships in two separate boxes
  • Not great for strict side sleepers
  • Expensive
7.9/10 CNET Score

Our take: The average queen-size mattress can support individuals weighing up to 250 pounds (or 500 pounds per couple). If you're heavier, you need a mattress with a strong support system so that it won't sag or soften prematurely -- enter Brooklyn Bedding's Titan Plus. This firm mattress is designed to support up to 1,000 pounds and offers a highly responsive, neutral foam feel that back and stomach sleepers will enjoy.

Pros

  • Hybrid design for heavier body types
  • Supportive for back and stomach sleepers
  • Option to add a cooling cover
  • Great price point

Cons

  • Not much pressure relief
  • Might be too firm for lighter individuals
7.5/10 CNET Score

Our take: The CopperFlex by Brooklyn Bedding is one of the most affordable, high-quality beds we've ever tested. It's available in all-foam and hybrid versions, and both models offer a dense memory foam feel that's slow to respond. Given its medium-firm profile, you won't sink into it too much, but you will feel some of that body-conforming sensation that memory foam provides. It's ideal for back and stomach sleepers, and heavier individuals who spend some time on their sides should be able to get by on it.

Pros

  • Budget-friendly
  • For those wanting a memory foam feel
  • Zoned support design
  • Hybrid and all-foam options

Cons

  • Not everyone likes a dense memory foam feel
  • Not suited for strict side sleepers
7.8/10 CNET Score

Our take: The Airweave Nagomi 1.0 (previously named Airweave 30) is unlike any other bed we've tested. We didn't need our Mattress Smasher 9000 to tell us that this thing is about as firm as it gets. In fact, the smasher scored Airweave an average of 10.8 out of 10 on the firmness scale. Yeah -- it's that firm. It will only work for strict back or stomach sleepers who seek the firmest, most supportive mattress possible.

Pros

  • Extremely supportive and responsive
  • Completely washable bed
  • Airfiber is a unique, hypoallergenic material
  • Breathable with lots of airflow

Cons

  • Expensive and has a return fee
  • Not for side or combination sleepers
  • Have to assemble the bed

Our sleep experts at CNET have spent countless hours examining and reviewing mattresses over the years, reaching 350 different beds at this point. Few beds on the market offer a genuinely extra-firm profile, but boy, do we love testing them. The work -- and the beds -- were hard, but someone had to do it. Whether you have back pain or seek a luxurious or organic extra-firm mattress, here's everything you need to know about the best extra-firm beds.

Best extra-firm mattress overall

Plank Firm by Brooklyn Bedding is the best overall extra-firm mattress, thanks to its supportive construction, dual-sided design and endorsement by the American Chiropractic Association. It's a flippable all-foam mattress with firm and extra-firm sides, so you can choose whichever best fits your needs as a back or stomach sleeper.

Retailing for $1,332, Brooklyn Bedding frequently discounts this mattress down to $999 for a queen-size model -- a great price for a firm mattress of this quality.

Best extra-firm mattresses for 2026

Pros

  • Dual-sided with two firmnesses
  • Extremely supportive for back sleepers
  • Good price point
  • Option to add GlacioTex Cooling Cover

Cons

  • Not suited for side sleepers
  • Not for those wanting a hybrid mattress

Our take: It's called Plank Firm for a reason -- this flippable mattress has a firm and extra-firm side, each offering a flat and responsive foam feel. Our Mattress Smasher rated the firm side 8.7 out of 10 on the firmness scale and the extra-firm side at a stiff 9.8 out of 10. It's within the top five firmest beds our team has tested.

How it sleeps: The extra-firm side of the Plank Firm is about as firm as it gets. There's essentially no pressure relief or cushioning. It almost gives the sensation that the mattress is pushing back against you. The firm side is slightly more pressure-relieving, but not by much. Both sides are incredibly supportive, endorsed by the American Chiropractic Association for improving lumbar support and helping to alleviate back pain.

Like most beds on this list, Plank Firm is best suited for back and stomach sleepers looking for spinal support. Neither side will accommodate strict side sleepers who need cushioning around the shoulders and hips. My partner and I slept on the Plank Firm for a few weeks before switching to a softer mattress. I found it comfortable as a stomach sleeper, but as a side sleeper, it made his arms and shoulders sore and numb.

Since it's responsive and firm, you won't sink into the layers of this mattress -- good news for hot sleepers. The dense all-foam construction means it's not quite as breathable as beds with coils, but if you're worried you'll be too hot, don't sweat it. For an additional cost, you can add Brooklyn Bedding's GlacioTex Cooling Cover.

Pros

  • Organic and natural materials
  • Solid edge support
  • Backed by the ACA
  • Firm and supportive for back and stomach sleepers

Cons

  • Might be too firm for light individuals
  • Not suitable for side sleepers

Our take: We recommend Avocado Green for back and stomach sleepers seeking a supportive organic mattress. This bed has a responsive yet firm latex foam feel, and our Mattress Smasher rated it 8.6 out of 10 on the firmness scale. Avocado is an eco-friendly brand that frequently appears on our mattress best lists due to its high-quality natural materials, such as GOLS-certified organic latex and GOTS-certified organic wool and cotton.

How it sleeps: Also backed by the American Chiropractic Association, Avocado Green's materials are naturally hypoallergenic and help wick moisture (though we wouldn't consider it cooling). It stands 11 inches tall and has 3 inches of organic Dunlop latex, which creates a bouncy and responsive feel that makes it easy to switch positions. The reinforced perimeter gives the mattress solid edge support, which is good if you share the bed with a partner or pets and tend to sleep on the edge.

This hybrid bed has a strong layer of steel coils arranged in seven distinct zones to keep your spine in healthy alignment. Avocado Green is a supportive mattress that back and stomach sleepers will likely find comfortable -- and its durability is backed by Avocado's 25-year limited warranty.

"If you're looking for a bed that's as sustainably sourced as possible, look no further than the Avocado Green. I personally really enjoy the responsive and bouncy latex feel, and it's easy to change positions," said Dillon Lopez, CNET senior video producer.

If you want something softer, consider Avocado Green's pillow-top model. Our team ranks its firmness level at medium-firm, which is still suitable for most back, stomach and combination sleepers.

Pros

  • Multiple coil layers for extra support
  • Three firmness levels and two height options
  • Patented Lumbar Zone technology
  • Free white glove delivery

Cons

  • Firm model is not suited for side sleepers
  • Not much give or pressure relief

Our take: Our CNET sleep team loves the Saatva Classic, which is why we also chose it as the best firm mattress overall. The most popular model is the luxury firm, but this mattress is also available in a firm version -- and it's one of the firmest beds we've ever slept on. This bed's feel is a mix of luxurious pillow-top with traditional innerspring, making it responsive yet neutral and accommodating. If you're looking for a high-quality bed that will provide tons of lumbar support for your chronic back pain, this is it.

How it sleeps: The firm model is so supportive that it gives the sensation of "floating" on top of the mattress rather than sinking into it. It's best suited for average to heavier-weight individuals and couples (230 pounds and up), as lighter individuals may find this bed too firm.

The Saatva Classic is available in 11.5-inch and 14.5-inch height options. Its construction includes a durable base unit of steel coils and high-density foam around the perimeter for enhanced edge support. The bed's second layer of individually wrapped coils is stronger in the center third (where most of your body weight lies), which helps keep your spine neutrally aligned. Since you won't sink into the layers much, it should sleep temperature-neutral for most people, but if you're an overly hot sleeper, consider one of the best cooling mattresses.

"The bed's supportive design, golden embroidery, organic cotton cover and traditional innerspring feel make it fit for a king. It ships to you for free with white glove delivery and isn't downright egregious in regards to price. What's not to love?" said JD Christison, CNET senior video producer and mattress expert.

Pricing based on Queen model

Pros

  • Luxurious pillow top feel
  • Great for heavier individuals and couples
  • Lumbar support for back and stomach sleepers
  • Cooling cover for hot sleepers

Cons

  • Ships in two separate boxes
  • Not great for strict side sleepers
  • Expensive

Our take: If you're looking for a firm, luxurious hybrid mattress with a cloud-like pillow top feel, the Helix Plus Elite is your answer. "The Elite lineup of beds from Helix are some of the nicest beds you can buy online. With that in mind, I think the price (after discounts) is reasonable for how luxurious it is," said Dillon Lopez, CNET senior video producer.

How it sleeps: "As far as feel is concerned, the Helix Plus Elite provides a traditional pillow top feel. It's like you're sleeping on a bed at a fancy hotel... it feels like a cold, supportive cloud," said Dillon Payne, CNET director of video production.

Our sleep team agrees that this bed lands around medium-firm, and our Mattress Smasher confirmed this by providing a firmness level of 7.6 out of 10. This means it offers more pressure relief than other beds on this list, thanks to its five layers of high-density foams.

In addition to motion-isolating micro-coils, this mattress has a durable support system of TitanCore steel coils, specifically made to support more weight. It's designed to hold up your midsection for proper spinal alignment and provide relief everywhere else, topped with Helix's GlacioTex Cooling Cover -- which is truly cool to the touch and great for hot sleepers.

Be warned: This thing is heavy. Due to its weight, the bed will ship to you in two boxes, and the top comfort layer has to be zipped on separately. It's a simple process, but we recommend having a friend or family member help you unbox and set up your new mattress.

Pros

  • Hybrid design for heavier body types
  • Supportive for back and stomach sleepers
  • Option to add a cooling cover
  • Great price point

Cons

  • Not much pressure relief
  • Might be too firm for lighter individuals

Our take: The average queen-size mattress can support individuals weighing up to 250 pounds (or 500 pounds per couple). If you're heavier, you need a mattress with a strong support system so that it won't sag or soften prematurely -- enter Brooklyn Bedding's Titan Plus. This firm mattress is designed to support up to 1,000 pounds and offers a highly responsive, neutral foam feel that back and stomach sleepers will enjoy.

How it sleeps: "The Titan Plus mattress is a great firm option, especially if you're looking for support in your mattress. I'm a fan of beds with a neutral feel and this has it, albeit a firm one!" said Wes Ott, CNET senior video producer

The Titan Plus sits between medium-firm and firm, depending on your body type and weight. If you're a heavier individual, it'll likely feel closer to medium-firm as you sink more into the comfort layers. Lighter individuals will perceive it as feeling firmer.

This mattress is just over 11 inches tall and includes an 8-inch support layer of 100% steel TitanCore coils. Beneath the quilted gel foam top is a firm comfort layer of TitanFlex foam infused with TitaniumGel, which is intended to help you sleep cooler. Without the optional GlacioTex Cooling Cover on top, this bed sleeps temperature-neutral, so you shouldn't overheat much. We suggest adding the cooling cover if you're a super hot sleeper.

Factoring in Brooklyn Bedding's frequent discounts throughout the year (especially around holidays), a queen-size Titan Plus can cost less than $1,000 -- a great price for a durable, high-quality mattress like this.

Pros

  • Budget-friendly
  • For those wanting a memory foam feel
  • Zoned support design
  • Hybrid and all-foam options

Cons

  • Not everyone likes a dense memory foam feel
  • Not suited for strict side sleepers

Our take: The CopperFlex by Brooklyn Bedding is one of the most affordable, high-quality beds we've ever tested. It's available in all-foam and hybrid versions, and both models offer a dense memory foam feel that's slow to respond. Given its medium-firm profile, you won't sink into it too much, but you will feel some of that body-conforming sensation that memory foam provides. It's ideal for back and stomach sleepers, and heavier individuals who spend some time on their sides should be able to get by on it.

How it sleeps: The feel and firmness of the all-foam and hybrid CopperFlex models are essentially the same. Both offer targeted lumbar support and pressure relief that is noticeable when you lie down. Its foam layers promote proper spinal alignment and can help those with chronic back pain and aches. Our Mattress Smasher gave CopperFlex a 7.8 out of 10 firmness rating, sitting between medium-firm and firm.

Our team recommends the hybrid version for heavier people because of its 6-inch layer of coils, which adds support and durability. The hybrid model also has slightly better edge support, so if you tend to sleep near the edge, the hybrid might be better. Conversely, the all-foam version of CopperFlex is cheaper and has better motion isolation, which could be better if you're a light sleeper who wakes up to your partner's movement.

"I think this bed is really great. Brooklyn Bedding nailed it with this design. For anyone who likes memory foam and wants something a little firmer with zoned support, this is going to be one of your better bets -- especially given its affordable price," said Owen Poole, CNET senior video producer.

A queen-size memory foam CopperFlex retails for $665, often dipping as low as $500 during Brooklyn Bedding's frequent sales. This is an incredible price for a bed of this quality.

Pros

  • Extremely supportive and responsive
  • Completely washable bed
  • Airfiber is a unique, hypoallergenic material
  • Breathable with lots of airflow

Cons

  • Expensive and has a return fee
  • Not for side or combination sleepers
  • Have to assemble the bed

Our take: The Airweave Nagomi 1.0 (previously named Airweave 30) is unlike any other bed we've tested. We didn't need our Mattress Smasher 9000 to tell us that this thing is about as firm as it gets. In fact, the smasher scored Airweave an average of 10.8 out of 10 on the firmness scale. Yeah -- it's that firm. It will only work for strict back or stomach sleepers who seek the firmest, most supportive mattress possible.

How it sleeps: Crafted in Japan, the Airweave Nagomi 1.0 is a 9-inch tall mattress with six solid blocks of proprietary Airfiber technology made of polyethylene. The material is perforated almost like an extremely hard sponge, allowing for a ton of airflow. It's breathable and should keep you temperature-regulated as you sleep, but we wouldn't consider it actively cooling.

Despite the thin comfort layer on top of the blocks, the feel is unlike conventional foam or coil mattresses. It's very firm and responsive without much give -- there's not really anything to sink into, and you'll sleep on top of the blocks. It almost feels like it's pushing back against you. It's designed to alleviate back and neck pain, and we think it'll work best for strict back sleepers looking for extra spinal and lumbar support.

A queen-size Airweave Nagomi mattress comes in three large boxes. Since it's delivered in pieces, you'll have to assemble the mattress. The process was a little time-consuming but straightforward. We recommend having a friend or family member help you put it together.

"The Airweave Nagomi 1.0 is one of the most interesting beds I've ever tested. I can see strict back and stomach sleepers looking for an ultra-firm option with a responsive, firm feel really preferring this mattress -- that is, if you have the money to spend up for it," said JD Christison, CNET senior video producer.

Extra-firm mattress firmness data

Our CNET sleep experts use subjective and objective methods of testing mattress firmness. Subjectively, we use our extensive experience and expertise to feel and analyze a bed's construction, describing where it lands on the firmness scale and assessing who it's best for. How firm a mattress feels will differ drastically from one person to the next, so we describe firmness from the perspective of varying body types, weights, genders and sleeping positions.

Plank Firm on the Mattress Smasher 9000

The Mattress Smasher tests the firm side of the flippable Plank Firm mattress.

Aly Lopez/CNET

We use our Mattress Smasher 9000, a proprietary device developed by CNET Labs, to objectively assess mattress firmness. This neat machine presses its actuator arm and sensor plate into each mattress, with a predetermined amount of force to simulate the body weight we're testing. It measures the distance traveled into the mattress and determines its firmness level on the industry-standard scale of 1 to 10. We always test mattresses subjectively first, followed by three to five "smashes" with the Mattress Smasher to determine their objective score.

From softest to firmest, here are the objective firmness levels gathered by the Mattress Smasher 9000 for the best extra-firm mattresses on this list.

How we test extra-firm mattresses

CNET's sleep experts have tested mattresses, bedding, sleep technology and accessories for years. We've spent thousands of hours honing our craft of thoroughly and honestly reviewing beds and sleep-related products. We have collectively tested nearly 350 mattresses from dozens of brands like Casper, Saatva, Tempur-Pedic, Helix and many, many more.

Our team is comprised of mattress testers with varying body weights and types, heights, genders and sleep preferences. This allows us to provide an in-depth assessment of each bed from multiple viewpoints. Our testing methodology includes analyzing firmness, feel, temperature regulation, motion isolation, edge support and special features.

Firmness

Firmness is one of the primary characteristics we look for when testing and choosing the best extra-firm mattresses -- simply put, it's how hard or soft the mattress feels. During testing, our sleep experts lie in each position to determine how much "give" there is with the materials under our body weight. Firm beds have more support and less pressure relief, and extra-firm beds are so supportive they almost feel like the bed is pushing back against you -- which is why we don't recommend them for side sleepers who need cushioning around the shoulders and hips.

Since firmness is subjective and can vary for everyone depending on weight and body type, we use the Mattress Smasher to measure firmness objectively. Beds are ranked from 1 to 10, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest. We consider extra-firm beds around 8 or up on the scale, making them best for stomach and back sleepers who need firm lumbar support for proper spinal alignment.

Feel

The feel of a mattress is another key element we analyze and review. How a bed feels is directly influenced by the types of foams and coils used in its construction. We describe what it feels like -- literally. Is it bouncy and springy? Is it easy to switch positions? Do the foams contour around your body and stay compressed for a while after you move? Does it have a soft, plush pillow top feel, or is it neutral? Are the coils or zoned support noticeable? Since you can't test every online bed yourself, we do our best to explain what it feels like to lie on the bed to help you determine if it's right for you.

Helix Elite Mattress 2024 Construction

Part of our testing involves removing the mattress cover and analyzing its interior construction. The materials used inform the feel and firmness of the bed.

Dillon Lopez/CNET

Extra-firm mattresses can have varying feels, depending on the density of their foams and the layers underneath. Memory foam can feel extra firm, as can neutral foams or bouncy and responsive latex foam.

Motion isolation

Motion isolation describes how well the mattress deadens movement across its surface. A mattress with decent motion isolation is important for light sleepers or those sharing the bed with a partner or pets. We test a bed's motion isolation capabilities with one expert lying on the bed while another tosses and turns about. Does the person lying still feel the movement through the mattress, or is it subtle and less noticeable?

We also test this by setting a glass of water on the edges of the bed, rolling toward and away from it to see if the glass falls or the liquid sloshes over. Mattresses with dense memory foam typically perform the best in this category. More responsive mattresses tend to have worse motion isolation.

Temperature regulation

Many external factors affect your temperature regulation while you sleep, from health conditions to the weather to your bedding and pajamas. Unless a mattress has specific cooling technology, it will likely sleep either temperature-neutral or possibly warm, depending on its materials (and how warm or cold you naturally sleep). During our testing process, we note how hot or cold a bed sleeps and how "breathable" the bed is based on its construction. Do the materials retain body heat and keep you warmer? Is there enough airflow for your body heat to escape? Is it cool to the touch?

Edge support

Edge support is how strong the bed's perimeter is. This is another key factor if you sleep with a partner or pets or just tend to sleep near the edge. We analyze how well the mattress holds its shape when we sit and lie on the edge. Does it cave in and make you feel like you'll roll off, or is it sturdy and supportive?

We push down on the perimeter to observe how much it compresses under pressure. Many brands add coils or firmer foam reinforcements around the edges to enhance this. Solid edge support creates a stable sleeping surface across the mattress.

Special features

Many mattress brands offer beds with extra features, such as covers with cooling technology for hot sleepers or zoned support for chronic back issues. We always test and review these additional characteristics to see if they live up to the brands' claims and to let you know which sleeper type would benefit most.

What to consider when shopping for an extra-firm mattress

We know the options can be overwhelming when shopping for a new bed-in-a-box mattress. The good news is that the right mattress for you depends on your personal preferences and needs (as well as your partner's if you share a bed). To help you narrow down your search, keep the following factors in mind while browsing online:

Sleeping position

Extra-firm mattresses are best for back or stomach sleepers. The firm profile helps prevent your midsection from sinking into the bed. A bed that's too soft for back and stomach sleepers can throw your spine out of alignment and cause back and neck pain.

Side and combination sleepers should generally avoid extra-firm mattresses. Side sleepers need a sleep surface that contours around their curves and relieves pressure around the shoulders, hips and knees. Without enough cushioning, side sleepers can experience aches, pains and even numbness in the arms and shoulders.

Body type

Your body type also influences which mattress you should choose. Heavier individuals (over 230 pounds) will sink further into the mattress, meaning it will feel softer to them. Petite individuals will put less pressure on the mattress, making it feel firmer. Extremely light sleepers should consider steering clear from extra-firm mattresses as they'll likely be too firm, even for back sleeping.

Additionally, we recommend heavier individuals and couples opt for hybrid mattresses with coils, as they offer a more robust support system and will last longer than all-foam beds.

Budget

Your budget is one of the first factors you should consider when shopping for an extra-firm mattress. Beds are a significant investment, and the prices range drastically. The average mattress costs between $800 and $1,200, but there are beds at every price. Budget shoppers can find mattresses as low as $300 or $400, or you can consider more luxurious options that are well over $2,000.

Extra-firm mattress FAQs

What type of mattress is the firmest?

A mattress's firmness is determined by its construction, and mattresses of varying construction can be considered "extra firm" -- whether super dense memory foam, responsive latex foam or proprietary material like Airweave's Airfiber technology. Generally, beds with coils and thin, firm foam on top will be firmer than all-foam beds, but that's not always the case.

Is it good to have an extra-firm mattress?

Firm and extra-firm mattresses can provide spinal support for those who sleep on their stomachs and backs. As you aren't able to sink far into the bed, your spine stays neutrally aligned all night, which minimizes back and neck pain. However, they're not the best for those who sleep on their sides, as the firm profile will likely cause pressure points on the shoulders, hips and knees.

Is a firm mattress good for back pain?

Firmer mattresses are great for back pain because they promote neutral spine alignment, which is key for avoiding back and neck pain while sleeping. They're best for those who sleep on their stomach or back. If you have a condition affecting your sleep, check out our list of the best mattresses for back pain.

Is a firm mattress good for side sleepers?

Generally, no, but it depends. The heavier you are, the more pressure you put on the bed and the more you sink in. This will influence how firm a mattress feels to you. So a bed that's considered firm may feel medium-firm to a heavier individual. Regardless, we wouldn't recommend an extra-firm mattress to side sleepers.
