Leesa is one of the few brands that launched the “bed-in-a-box” online mattress revolution. Since the release of the Leesa Original mattress over a decade ago, it has added several beds to its lineup. The Legend Chill Hybrid is easily one of Leesa’s most high-end beds, matched only by the Leesa Reserve Hybrid and the Sapira Chill Hybrid, and it is on my short list of favorite mattresses I’ve tested

First impressions of the Leesa Legend Chill Hybrid mattress

We received the entire new Leesa Chill mattress lineup at the same time, so we got a very good idea of what the entire line was all about right off the bat. It was clear that the Leesa Legend Chill was intended to be the most luxurious mattress it had to offer.

Right out of the box, I could tell it has a strong cooling cover and is the most “chill” in the Chill lineup. I could also tell rather quickly that its feel was different from the rest, thanks largely to the micro coils in its construction.

I think very highly of all the mattresses from Leesa, but it was clear right off the bat that the Legend Chill is a cut above.

Is the Leesa Legend Chill Hybrid mattress right for you?

Anyone looking for a bed with a universally comfortable pillow-top feel, cooling features and an accommodating firmness profile should consider the Leesa Legend Chill Hybrid. It is exactly the type of mattress a lot of people, especially couples, are looking for.

The only downside to this bed is its high price tag. It does get more affordable after factoring in discounts, but it is still in the luxury tier -- but if it fits your budget I have a hard time imagining anyone returning the Legend Chill.

Leesa Legend Chill Hybrid mattress firmness and feel

Legend Chill mattress feel

The Legend Chill Hybrid's feel fits broadly into the “pillow-top” category, but with some subtle nuances. Pillow-top beds are generally very accommodating for most sleepers because they provide lots of bounce and support while having softer top layers that usually feel light, airy and fluffy.

Jon Gomez/CNET

This is how I would describe the feel of the Legend Chill, but with a slight hint of a body-conforming memory foam feel. The bed uses some memory foam and a layer of micro coils. Micro coils provide target support and naturally conform to your body like a memory foam would -- but since it is a spring, it still maintains the responsive feel that is unlike memory foam.

I think pretty much everyone will find this bed to be super comfortable. For people seeking a more traditional memory foam bed, this type may not be your favorite. Still, I have difficulty seeing people trying it and not finding it comfortable.

Legend Chill mattress firmness

One of my only gripes with the Leesa Legend Chill Hybrid is that it is available only in one firmness profile. The other beds in the Chill lineup, like the Oasis Chill Hybrid and the Sapira Chill Hybrid, come with two and three firmness options, respectively. I am unsure why the most expensive bed in the lineup only has one, but fortunately, the firmness profile is very accommodating.

Our new Mattress Smasher 9000 firmness testing device, which gives beds a more objective firmness rating, gave this bed a 4.1 out of 10, which is on the soft end of medium (4 to 6 out of 10). All of the mattress testers on our team agreed that it was in the medium range before putting it on the Mattress Smasher.

This means that it will generally accommodate all sleeper types, back, stomach, side and combination. This profile is especially desirable for couples with different preferences because it's right down the middle, and it should work fairly well for everyone.

Back sleepers might want to find something firmer than the Legend Chill because it is on the soft end of medium, but I think it will be plenty supportive for back and stomach sleepers as well.

Leesa Legend Chill Hybrid mattress construction

The Legend Chill has several different layers and is roughly 13.5 inches thick.

The bottommost layer is just a thin layer of dense foam that provides a solid foundation for the 8-inch-thick layer of individually wrapped springs. These coils are in a zoned-support configuration, with the center third having a slightly more supportive spring to provide targeted support. Also, the coils along the bed's perimeter are slightly thicker-gauge steel that improves the edge support.

Jon Gomez/CNET

Above the coil layer is a 1.5-inchs thick layer of comfort foam, which acts as a transition layer between the support layers and the comfort layers above.

Next, there is a three-quarter-inch thick layer of micro coils that I mentioned earlier. On a king-size model, there are 2,756 of these coils across the bed.

Above this layer of coils is a one-inch-thick layer of responsive memory foam, followed by the quilted cover, which features additional comfort foams.

The bed’s cover is also cool-to-the-touch with a “phase change” material woven into it.

I was actually able to see how these beds are made at the 3Z Brands mattress factory in Phoenix, and I think all Leesa beds made there are high quality.

Leesa Legend Chill Hybrid performance

Edge support

During testing, we found the Legend Chill's edge support to be excellent. The enhanced coils along the perimeter greatly improve the edge support compared with beds without this feature.

leesa-legend-chill-hybrid-jg-50.jpg
Jon Gomez/CNET

Beds with poor edge support make you feel like you’re going to roll off the mattress near the outer edge, and it is easy to sleep near the perimeter of the edge if you're sharing a bed with a partner or pets.

Motion isolation

Motion isolation refers to how well the bed deadens the impact of movement on the mattress. Good motion isolation is especially important if you're a light sleeper who shares a mattress with someone who tosses and turns a lot.

Hybrids like the Legend Chill tend to perform less than foam beds in this category because of the responsive nature of the coils. However, during testing, we found that the Legend Chill is among the best hybrid beds in this category. I have observed that beds containing micro coils do better at deadening cross-mattress motion than beds that don’t.

This is great news for light sleepers who might be sharing this mattress with a partner.

Temperature regulation

I’ve mentioned the cooling cover on the Leesa Legend Chill a few times. It is very strong and should help you sleep slightly cooler and avoid night sweats. Another benefit of micro coils is that they improve airflow over foam, which allows the Legend Chill even more. Hot sleepers shouldn’t have any issues with this bed, and if you still have night sweats on it, I would be surprised.

Sleeping temperature generally has more to do with your bedroom and sleep environment than the bed itself, but a cooling bed like this can be helpful.

Leesa Legend Chill Hybrid mattress policies

Free shipping

All Leesa mattresses ships right to your door at no extra cost in the contiguous United States inside of a box. Unboxing a mattress is a quick and easy process; we’ve done it literally hundreds of times, and it's actually fun.

This bed is quite heavy, though, so I recommend having someone else there to help you and make it more manageable.

100-night trial

Leesa offers the usual standard in-home sleep trial of 100 nights. So you get roughly three months to really test out the bed to see if it’s supportive enough and comfortable enough for you.

Remember that it can take a month or longer for your body to adjust to a new mattress, no matter how well-suited it is to you. So, if you struggle to get a good night’s sleep in the first week or two, don’t panic.

Return policy

Despite more brands introducing return fees, Leesa still offers completely free returns on all of its mattresses if you choose to return them within the provided trial period.

Returning a mattress is usually pretty easy; you just contact the company, and usually, a group will come by your house to pick up the bed. Then, it will often get donated or sometimes resold by a third party.

Warranty

As of Feb. 28, 2025, all Leesa mattresses are backed by lifetime warranties. It used to offer a standard 10-year warranty, but seeing the brand increase its warranty duration is good news and offers buyers more long-term protection.

The Leesa Legend Chill is in the luxury tier of mattress pricing. Its retail price is in a similar range to very high-end beds from other brands like the Tempur-Pedic Pro Adapt, Saatva Rx, Amerisleep AS6 Black Series and Beautyrest.

Based on the quality, I think the price makes sense and it is regularly on discount to bring the cost down to the $2,250 mark, depending on the time of year. Make sure you check out our mattress deals page for the latest price on the Legend Chill Hybrid.

How does the Leesa Legend Chill Hybrid compare to similar mattresses?

Leesa Legend Chill Hybrid vs. Saatva Classic

The Saatva Classic is one of CNET’s all-time favorite beds, and it is among the best pillow-top mattresses you can buy. It has a more traditional innerspring type of feel, similar to the Legend Chill, but the Saatva Classic doesn’t have that hint of memory foam. The Saatva Classic has three firmness options, including an ultra-firm choice for side sleepers. It is supportive, with two layers of coils and is slightly more affordable than the Legend Chill. The Legend Chill does unambiguously win the temperature regulation category, though.

Leesa Legend Chill Hybrid vs. Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe

The Aurora Luxe mattress from Brooklyn Bedding is one of CNET’s picks for “Best Cooling Beds.” The cooling factor on the Aurora Luxe and the Legend Chill are comparable, but I think the Aurora Luxe gets a slight edge. The Aurora Luxe is a thinner bed with fewer layers. It can be purchased with an optional “Cloud Pillow-top” that makes the bed a bit more plush, but for a significant extra cost. Even with the extra cost of the pillow top, the Aurora Luxe is more affordable than the Legend Chill. The Legend Chill does have the unique aspect of the micro coils in its construction -- but the Aurora Luxe is available in multiple firmness options.

Final thoughts on the Leesa Legend Chill Hybrid mattress

The Leesa Legend Chill Hybrid is one of my favorite beds out of the hundreds I’ve tested. If this mattress fits your budget, you will really like it. Couples should be strongly interested in the Legend Chill because of its universally comfortable feel, accommodating firmness profile, and excellent edge support and motion isolation performance. It's also a great choice for hot sleepers seeking relief from night sweats.

Jon Gomez/CNET

I do wish this bed came in multiple firmness options like the Sapira Chill Hybrid, and it would be nice if the cost was a little bit lower -- but the Legend Chill Hybrid is one of the best luxury pillow-top beds I’ve tested.

You might like the Legend Chill Hybrid mattress if:

  • You want a pillow-top feel
  • You enjoy a mattress with a medium profile
  • You want a cooling mattress
  • You're sharing the mattress

You might not like the Legend Chill Hybrid mattress if:

  • You prefer a foam mattress
  • You want an especially soft or firm mattress
  • You prefer the feel of memory foam
  • You're shopping on a budget

Other mattresses from Leesa

Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid: The Sapira Chill Hybrid is more affordable than the Legend Chill and has a similar pillow-top design. It is also available in three different firmness options, which is great for sleepers looking for an especially soft or firm mattress rather than just a medium. It also has a cooling cover, but it isn’t as strong as the Legend Chill. The Sapira Chill doesn’t have any micro coils in its construction and has a different layer of foam instead.

Leesa Legend Hybrid: The base model, non-Chill, Leesa Legend is a great pick for side sleepers. It is softer than the Legend Chill, and it also uses micro coils, but the micro coil layer on the base model Legend forms a zoned-support layer, with dense foam in the middle and micro coils on the outer thirds. The cover isn’t cool, but it does feature merino wool and is very luxurious. Considering the base model Legend is only about $200 less than the Legend Chill, I think most people would rather pay the extra for the pillow top and cooling cover, but the base model Legend could make sense for side sleepers.
