Score Breakdown
Pros and Cons
The Puffy Monarch, a new high-end mattress from Puffy, has replaced the Puffy Royal as the brand’s most luxurious and expensive bed. And while the Monarch has all the features and qualities you'd expect of a mattress with its high price tag, in my expert opinion, it gets lost in the shuffle among the competition.
First impressions of the Puffy Monarch mattress
The Puffy Monarch is among the nicest-looking mattresses we’ve tested. Its premium design is very inviting, and the small Puffy cloud logos stitched into the cover are a nice touch.
I also noticed that the Monarch's cover is fairly cool to the touch -- not to the same level as my favorite cooling mattresses, but definitely enough to make a difference for hot sleepers.
The thing that surprised me the most, though, was its firmness profile. Puffy seems to have a sliding scale of firmness with its lineup of four mattresses, with the Puffy Cloud being the firmest; I assumed the Monarch would be the softest. Puffy even describes this mattress as being “luxury-plush,” but that’s not what we observed. After testing, our rating of the Monarch's firmness is slightly firmer than a medium. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it was surprising
Overall, my first impression of the Puffy Monarch was pretty positive, but it became less positive when I saw the price tag.
Is the Puffy Monarch mattress right for you?
The Puffy Monarch is packed with a lot of features, including zoned support, a cooling cover, reinforced edge support, some organic materials and a unique blend of foams. Shoppers with a large budget and a desire for premium features will be drawn to the Monarch.
If you buy it, you'll likely be happy with it -- though I believe you can find equally great beds for less.
Puffy Monarch mattress firmness and feel
Puffy Monarch feel
The Puffy Monarch has a somewhat unique feel, thanks to a construction style that’s becoming more common in recent years. It combines foams with nearly opposite characteristics to create a balanced feel that I think most sleepers will enjoy.
Imagine mattress feel as a spectrum. On one end, there's a super responsive, buoyant and bouncy sensation. On the opposite end, there's a dense, slow-to-respond, sink-in feeling. Puffy Monarch falls in the middle of this wide range of possibilities because it uses both latex and memory foam within, alongside wool near the sleeping surface.
The mattress contains quite a bit more memory foam than latex foam, though, so the feel leans more toward the memory foam end of the spectrum.
Puffy Monarch firmness and sleeper types
The firmness profile of the Puffy Monarch is probably its most surprising aspect. Based on the rest of the Puffy lineup and how the Monarch is described on Puffy’s website, I expected this mattress to be in the medium to medium-soft range, but we found it to be in the medium to medium-firm range.
Everyone on our team agreed that it was surprisingly firm, and our new Mattress Smasher 9000 firmness testing device confirmed what we thought, giving it a score of 6.85 out of 10, with 10 being the most firm.
This means the Monarch should be relatively accommodating for most sleeper types: back, stomach, side and combination. Primary side sleepers, especially those who are lightweight, might find it slightly too firm.
Side sleepers generally prefer softer beds that cradle the hips and shoulders, while lighter individuals tend to experience beds as firmer than heavier sleepers. Aside from that, I think most people will find the Monarch’s firmness level accommodating.
Puffy Monarch mattress construction
The Puffy Monarch's construction begins with its support layer, which is a 6-inch-thick layer of individually encased coils. The coils are surrounded by a dense foam border that effectively reinforces edge support.
Above the support coils is a 3-inch-thick layer of “Cloud Sculpting Foam,” which provides even more support and has five different zones to give the bed targeted support. Above this layer comes a 2-inch-thick layer of responsive-style memory foam, and above that layer of memory foam is a 1-inch-thick layer of latex foam.
This construction is uncommon in most mattresses since memory foam and latex foam have opposite characteristics -- latex provides a bouncy, buoyant feel, while memory foam offers a sink-in, body-contouring effect. The latex layer is what gives the Monarch its balanced feel.
Above the latex foam, there are two additional comfort layers -- neutral poly foam, more memory foam and a layer of alpaca wool. The whole thing is wrapped up with a quilted, cooling cover.
Puffy Monarch zone support
One of the other features of the Puffy Monarch mattress is its zoned support. Many beds we've tested offer some kind of targeted zone support design, but most of the time, it's not something that can be felt very strongly.
This mattress has been endorsed by the American Chiropractic Association for its ability to help with back pain, which could be a huge selling point for many sleepers.
I’m not a doctor, so if you have severe aches and pains, I recommend consulting your physician before choosing a mattress. That said, very few beds we’ve tested come with an ACA endorsement.
Puffy Monarch mattress performance
Edge support
It's easy wind up sleeping near the perimeter of a mattress if you share a bed with a partner or pets. Beds with poor edge support make you feel like you’re going to roll off the mattress when you find yourself near the outer edge.
In the construction section above, I mentioned that the Puffy Monarch has a layer of dense support foam that encases the perimeter of the mattress, which makes the edge support very strong. We didn’t feel or notice any roll-off sensation during testing, so I see this as a non-issue.
Motion isolation
Motion isolation refers to how well the bed deadens the impact of movement on the mattress. Good motion isolation is especially important if you're a light sleeper who shares a mattress with someone who tosses and turns.
The Puffy Monarch performs well in this category, too, because of the sheer number of foam layers above the coils and its multiple layers of memory foam.
I recently made the switch to a Tempur-Pedic mattress for improved motion isolation, and my partner reports much-improved sleep. While the Monarch doesn’t perform quite as well as a Tempur-Pedic, it does better than the average bed.
Temperature regulation
The Puffy Monarch has a fairly strong cooling factor, thanks to the materials in the cover. It isn’t quite as strong as some of the beds on our Best Cooling Beds list, but hot sleepers will appreciate the cooling features.
Puffy emphasizes the use of alpaca wool in the mattress, which assists with temperature regulation. We think the wool layer aids with breathability, but doesn't have that big of an overall effect.
The bottom line: If you’re a hot sleeper, the Puffy Monarch shouldn’t make you sleep hot.
Puffy Monarch mattress pricing
| Size | Measurements (inches) | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Twin XL | 38x80 | $3,249 |
| Queen | 60x80 | $4,549 |
| King | 76x80 | $5,049 |
| Cal king | 72x84 | $5,049 |
| Split king | 76x80 | $5,148 |
The Puffy Monarch comes with an inarguably high price tag, comparable to Tempur-Pedic, Beautyrest and the Purple Luxe lineup. Fortunately, Puffy is almost always running a steep discount on its beds, and as of writing, you can get a queen-size mattress for $3,199.
I don’t want to single out Puffy too much since many brands do this, but it seems to be the worst offender when it comes to website banners with countdowns claiming a deal is about to expire. In reality, I’ve never seen the deal actually end without renewing -- so don’t feel pressured by the ticking clock.
Puffy Lux Hybrid mattress policies
Free shipping
The Puffy Monarch will ship right to your door inside a box at no additional cost -- which is pretty standard for most online mattresses.
Unboxing a mattress is a pretty easy process and should only take a few minutes. I always recommend unboxing with someone else because beds get heavy and can be difficult to move solo.
Keep in mind that it may take up to 48 hours for the mattress to fully inflate and reach its proper firmness level, and there may also be a bit of an odor right after it's unboxed.
101-night trial
All Puffy mattresses come with a 101-night trial -- one night more than the standard 100. So, you get a little extra time to decide.
It can take a month or longer for your body to adjust to a new mattress, no matter how well it suits your sleeping preferences. The trial period begins the day the mattress is delivered, not when you actually start sleeping on it.
Return policy
If you decide the Puffy Monarch mattress isn’t for you at any point after the first 30 nights post-delivery, you can return it and get a refund. You just contact the company and it will coordinate with a third party to pick up the mattress. These unwanted beds are usually donated.
As of now, Puffy doesn’t charge return, transportation or any other fees for mattress returns, making the purchase virtually risk-free.
Warranty
All Puffy mattresses are backed by a lifetime warranty, which is above and beyond the usual online mattress standard of 10 years.
Like pretty much any warranty that lasts longer than 10 years, it's tiered and offers more protection in the first 10 years in comparison to the years after.
How does the Puffy Monarch mattress compare to similar mattresses?
Puffy Monarch vs. Leesa Natural
The Leesa Natural is similar to the Puffy Monarch in that it also uses a blend of memory foam and latex foam in its construction. The Monarch has more memory foam than latex foam though, and the Leesa Natural has more latex foam than memory foam. Both beds also have a similar firmness profile and are accommodating for most sleeper types. The Leesa Natural doesn’t have any noticeable cooling features, but it's also a lot more affordable than the Monarch, with a retail price of $2,099 for a queen-size.
Puffy Monarch vs. Helix Elite
The Helix Elite lineup is the most high-end option available from Helix. The Elite beds use a combination of foams and micro coils to provide an accommodating pillow-top feel. All of the Elite beds also have a strong cooling cover on par with the Monarch, and by taking Helix’s Sleep Quiz, you can find which of the six Elite beds is ideal for you and your sleeping preferences. After a discount, any of the Elite beds will be slightly more affordable than the Monarch.
Final thoughts on the Puffy Monarch mattress
There’s a lot to like about the Puffy Monarch mattress. Most sleepers will appreciate its balanced, blended foam feel, along with features like cooling, zoned support and reinforced edges. Its firmness level is also accommodating for a wide range of sleepers.
However, for the price, the Puffy Monarch doesn’t quite cut it. While the Puffy Monarch has its strengths, it doesn’t excel in any specific area. Beds like the Helix Elite lineup offer more variety in firmness, allowing for specialized options for back or side sleepers. Its cooling performance also falls short compared to other mattresses in the same price range.
Don’t get me wrong, I think it's a great bed, but I also think you could find a bed of equal quality at a lower price.
You might like the Puffy Monarch mattress if:
- You want a balanced feel
- You want a slightly firmer-than-medium mattress
- You want a mattress with coils
- You're a hot sleeper
You might not like the Puffy Monarch mattress if:
- You prefer a foam bed
- You want an especially soft mattress
- You're shopping on a budget
Other mattresses from Puffy
Puffy Cloud Mattress: This is Puffy's most “basic” mattress and is meant to compete with beds like the Nectar Classic and the Casper One. It's made with three foam layers and has a traditional, dense memory foam feel. Its firmness profile is ideal for back and stomach sleepers. It's a bit more expensive than the competing mattresses I mentioned, but it also has a cooling cover that its competition lacks.
Puffy Royal Hybrid Mattress: This is the upgraded version of the Puffy Lux Hybrid. The biggest difference is that it has an additional layer of memory foam, which makes it feel slightly more dense. This mattress also has a layer of zoned-support foam, which can help with back pain. The additional layers in the Puffy Royal make it a bit softer and more plush than the Puffy Lux Hybrid.
