Pros and Cons

Cons

A bit expensive

Tuft & Needle is one of the oldest online mattress brands and is actually owned by mattress giant Serta Simmons. The Tuft & Needle mattress line features four different beds, and the brand-new Mint Hybrid is the most high-end mattress available from Tuft & Needle.

This is a replacement for the old Tuft & Needle Hybrid, a bed we liked a lot. The same things we liked about that bed, we also like about the new Mint Hybrid. It is comfortable, accommodating, and supportive and has a unique design we don’t usually see.

First impressions of the Tuft & Needle Mint mattress

When the team first unboxed the new Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid mattress, the first thing we noticed was the design of the cover. The previous model had a bit of a strange look to it that sort of resembled a pair of jeans. We actually dubbed the old Tuft & Needle Hybrid as the “denim bed” in our office.

The new Mint Hybrid has a two-tone dark gray exterior with mint green accents on the cover and the zipper, which I think looks much more sleek, especially compared to the old model.

The second thing I noticed was the firmness profile on the Mint Hybrid. Often, a brand will make its most expensive and “high-end” mattress the softest and most plush in the lineup, but even out of the box myself and the rest of the team didn’t think the firmness of the Mint Hybrid was much different than the other beds from Tuft & Needle.

Overall, my first impression of the Mint Hybrid was positive and I thought it was a marginal improvement over the old Tuft & Needle Hybrid -- but I was also left wondering, “why would someone spend up for this bed, instead of saving money and buying the Tuft & Needle Original Hybrid?’

Is the Tuft & Needle Mint mattress right for you?

For anyone looking for an accommodating, supportive hybrid I think the Mint Hybrid is a solid option. This bed features two layers of coils which makes it very supportive, and it has a nearly universally comfortable feel with excellent performance for couples.

It is a bit expensive and not significantly different from the more affordable Tuft & Needle Original Hybrid (not to be confused with the discontinued model), but there are a few factors that set it apart.

Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid mattress firmness and feel

Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid mattress feel

The feel of the Mint Hybrid mattress is what we like to call “neutral.” Mattress feel is a spectrum with two poles: one end is a super responsive, buoyant and bouncy sensation, and the other end is a dense, slow-to-respond and sink-in type of sensation.

However, due to a unique construction element, microcoils, the Mint Hybrid has a slight memory foam sensation. It is very subtle, and for those of you who really dislike the feel of memory foam I don’t think you’ll find it uncomfortable, but it isn’t as perfectly “neutral” as the other beds from Tuft & Needle because of the microcoils.

So on the whole, the Mint Hybrid still has an accommodating neutral feel, but it's just a bit different than the other models from Tuft & Needle.

Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid firmness and sleeper types

I expected the Mint Hybrid to be the softest mattress from Tuft & Needle, but in our testing process, we actually found it to be the most firm of the four, but not by a significant amount.

  • Tuft & Needle Original Firmness Score - 5.3 out of 10
  • Tuft & Needle Original Hybrid Firmness Score - 6.2 out of 10
  • Tuft & Needle Mint Firmness Score - 6.2 out of 10
  • Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid - 7 out of 10

All four of the beds from Tuft & Needle have a similar distribution of firmness scores according to our Mattress Smasher 9000 firmness testing machine. The biggest outlier, though, was the Mint Hybrid, which is closer to a medium-firm rating.

Based on our more traditional testing by consensus method, we all found the Mint Hybrid to be the most firm and between a medium and a medium-firm.

This means that the Mint Hybrid will be ideal for back, stomach and combination sleepers. It is not best for primary side sleepers, because side sleepers usually prefer softer beds that provide more pressure relief.

Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid mattress construction

The Mint mattress is built with five layers: two layers of coils and three layers of foam, and it is roughly fourteen inches in height. The bottommost layer is roughly eight inches of coils that provide the main support base on the mattress.

Above the main layer of coils is actually a second layer of thin, tiny coils called “microcoils.” We have encountered these types of coils in a handful of different beds like the Saatva Rx, Leesa Legend Hybrid, the Helix Elite beds and the old Tuft & Needle Hybrid.

Because the coils are so tiny, there are usually well over 2,000 of them in most beds that feature these coils and because of their quantity, they provide very targeted support and in our experience they can mimic the sink-in feel of a memory foam while still being very bouncy.

Above the two layers of coils is a layer of “T&N Adaptive” foam which is a bouncy and responsive style of foam. On previous Tuft & Needle models, this foam was the main comfort layer, but on this version of the Mint Hybrid mattress, it functions as a transition layer between the support foam and the additional comfort layers above.

Above the Adaptive foam is a layer of “T&N Release” foam which behaves in a similar way to a memory foam: slow to respond and body conforming. And then the primary comfort layer of the Mint mattress is “T&N Flex” foam which is somewhere between the “Release” and “Adaptive” foam.

Because of the micro coils and the “Release” foam, the Mint Hybrid does have a slight memory foam sensation, but it's very subtle and still has a neutral feel.

Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid performance

Edge support

During testing, we found nothing to worry about with the edge support on the Mint Hybrid mattress. Beds with poor edge support make you feel like you’re going to roll off the mattress near the outer edge, and it is easy to sleep near the perimeter of the edge if you are sharing a bed with a partner or pets.

Jon Gomez/CNET

To my knowledge, the coils along the perimeter are not built with a thick gauge of steel like on some beds, but the coils are very supportive and the Mint Hybrid has improved edge support over the foam Mint mattress.

Motion isolation

Motion isolation refers to how well the bed deadens the impact of movement on the mattress -- if you are a light sleeper who shares a mattress with someone who tosses and turns a lot, having good motion isolation is especially important.

Fortunately, the Mint Hybrid mattress performs very well in this category for a coil bed. Beds that are made entirely with foam layers have the best motion isolation, but the Mint Hybrid is one of the better coil beds we’ve seen in this category.

Because of this bed’s accommodating feel, firmness profile and motion isolation performance, I see this mattress being a great option for couples.

Temperature regulation

The Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid mattress should sleep temperature neutral which means you shouldn’t be sleeping warm at night because of the mattress. If you do sleep hot, it is likely due to other environmental factors. The foams and the cover are plenty breathable, but there’s no “active cooling” elements we find on other mattresses.

Hybrid beds have marginally better temperature regulation compared to foam beds just because coils provide more natural airflow, but if you are looking for a truly cool sleeping bed be sure to check out our best cooling beds list.

Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid mattress pricing

Twin XL 38x80$1,595
Full 54x75$1,795
Queen 60x80$1,995

The Mint Hybrid is the most expensive bed from Tuft & Needle by a pretty wide margin. It is in the same pricing bracket as very high quality beds we love like the Saatva Classic, WinkBed and Leesa Sapira

Tuft & Needle tends to not offer discounts throughout the year like some other brands -- but you might be able to find a discount around major holidays like President’s Day, Memorial Day or Black Friday.

Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid mattress policies

Free shipping

The Mint Hybrid mattress ships right to your door at no extra cost in the contiguous United States inside of a box. Unboxing a mattress is a quick and easy process; we’ve done it literally hundreds of times.

Unless you are ordering a twin mattress, I recommend having another person there to help you out because beds can get quite heavy, and they’re different to move.

100-night trial

Tuft & Needle offers the usual standard in-home sleep trial of 100 nights. So you get roughly 3 months to really test out the bed to see if it’s supportive enough and comfortable enough for you.

Keep in mind that it can take a month or longer for your body to adjust to a new mattress, no matter how well-suited it is to you. So, if you struggle to get a good night’s sleep in the first week or two, don’t panic.

Most brands will ask you to sleep on the bed for 21-30 nights before initiating a return -- I don’t think Tuft & Needle has this requirement, but I think it is best practice regardless.

Return policy

Tuft & Needle, despite more brands introducing return fees, still offers completely free returns on all of its mattresses if you choose to return it within the provided trial period.

Returning a mattress is usually pretty easy; you just contact the company, and usually, a group will come by your house to pick up the bed, and then it will often get donated or sometimes resold by a third party.

Warranty

All Tuft & Needle mattresses are backed by a standard 10-year warranty. If you buy a mattress online, a 10-year warranty is the minimum you should expect.

How does the Tuft & Needle Mint compare to similar mattresses?

Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid vs. Leesa Sapira Hybrid

The Leesa Sapira Hybrid is another comfortable, accommodating hybrid from a longstanding online mattress brand that is roughly the same price as the Mint Hybrid before discounts.

The Leesa Sapira Hybrid has more of a flat, neutral feel compared to the Mint Hybrid because it doesn’t have that hint of memory foam. The Sapira does have improved edge support compared to the Mint Hybrid because the perimeter coils are a thicker gauge of steel, but the Mint Hybrid has better motion isolation.

Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid vs. Casper Dream Hybrid

The Dream Hybrid from Casper is another comfortable, accommodating hybrid with a unique design feature. The Mint Hybrid features those microcoils, and the Dream Hybrid features a zoned-support design that is slightly more firm in the center third of the bed to give sleepers targeted lumbar support, which can help with back pain.

The Dream Hybrid also has a medium firmness profile that is noticeably softer than the Mint Hybrid and a very accommodating feel that most sleepers find comfortable.

Final verdict

I think the Mint Hybrid is an undeniably comfortable bed that you will really enjoy should you buy one. I think it is great for couples who struggle to agree on a comfortable bed because of its feel and its excellent edge support and motion isolation.

The only issue I have with it is that I think most sleepers will be just as happy with the foam version of the Mint mattress or the Original Hybrid, which can be bought at lower prices.

I think to get the Mint Hybrid you have to be interested in the dual coil layer design which is what makes the bed unique. I think this design gives the Mint Hybrid some unique characteristics, like the slight memory foam quality to its feel, but not really enough to justify the extra cost.

You might like the Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid mattress if:

  • You want a neutral feel
  • You enjoy a firmer mattress
  • You are sharing the mattress
  • You enjoy a hint of memory foam

You might not like the Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid mattress if:

  • You prefer a foam bed
  • You want an especially soft bed
  • You are shopping on a budget

Other mattresses from Tuft & Needle

Tuft & Needle Original: this is the flagship mattress from Tuft & Needle, and it is the most popular and most affordable Tuft & Needle mattress. It has fewer foam layers and is thinner than the Mint mattress, but it has the same type of accommodating, neutral feel. It is softer than the Mint Hybrid, scoring a 5.3 out of 10 on our Mattress Smasher 9000.

Tuft & Needle Original Hybrid: this is essentially the Tuft & Needle Original, but instead of using foam for support, it uses coils. It uses the foam configuration as the Original but has a more responsive feel thanks to the coils. Unlike the Mint Hybrid, it doesn’t have any memory foam sensation and has a truly neutral feel. It is slightly more than the foam Original mattress but softer than the Mint Hybrid.
