Korean skin care, also known as K-beauty, has become a trend in the US over the past few years, with many social media creators sharing their favorite products and techniques like “slugging." Now, even retailers like Amazon, Target, Sephora and Ulta offer K-beauty products to customers. But with so many of these skin care items on the market, it can be tough to know what's a good fit for your skin -- especially if you have sensitive skin, like me. To help you narrow it down, I tested 35 Korean skin care products from 11 different brands over the course of one month to see which gave me the best results.

Our Picks

Why we like it: If you're familiar with K-beauty, chances are you have heard of Beauty of Joseon. This brand went especially viral on social media. It is known for having a diverse product lineup for all skin concerns. I tested the popular Apricot Blossom Peeling Gel and the Ginseng Essence Water on my dry and sensitive skin. I highly recommend the peeling gel. Its grittiness is made of plant-based cellulose that gently exfoliates the skin and addresses texture issues. It has a slight scent, but the ingredients have never been too harsh or irritating to my skin. I love how soft my face feels after using the gel.

Pros

  • Offers sunscreen, serums, masks, moisturizers, toners, exfoliators and cleansers
  • Utilizes traditional ingredients such as ginseng, rice, plum flower, propolis, green tea and mugwort
  • Some products are available on Amazon and Target

Cons

  • Standard shipping from the website is higher than usual
  • Some products contain coconut oil that may trigger acne breakouts

Why we like it: The Cosrx brand has taken off in the US thanks to its popular Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence. Snail mucin is exactly what it sounds like -- secretion from snails. It sounds gross, but I have been using this product for years, and I even use the corresponding snail mucin All-in-One moisturizer from time to time. Both products were a lifesaver during the dry, cold winter months. As someone who struggles with hydration retention, I can’t recommend Cosrx enough. The serum feels a bit slimy, but it gives a dewy finish over makeup or skin care. I love to use it to “slug” or lock in my moisturizer.

Pros

  • Popular snail mucin products are fairly affordable and last a while
  • Multiple SPF products, unlike other brands
  • Readily available at Amazon, Target and Ulta

Cons

  • The slimy feel can be off-putting to come
  • Not vegan

Why we like it: Peach and Lily offers a variety of products for sensitive skin troubles such as eczema, redness or extreme dryness (to name a few). As someone who deals with all three, I have found the products from Peach and Lily to be both soothing and gentle. My favorite products are the Matcha Pudding Antioxidant Cream and the Glass Skin Refining Serum. Both contain niacinamide, which is used to battle dryness.

Pros

  • Some products have the National Eczema Association's Seal of Acceptance
  • Suitable for dry, oily, normal and combination skin types
  • Clean beauty brand

Cons

  • On the more expensive side

Why we like it: House of Dohwa is one of the few brands on this list that is both vegan and cruelty-free. However, it further stands out by being all-natural. The products incorporate rice bran extract, a traditional Korean skin care ingredient. Rice bran has been used for centuries as an exfoliant, and it contains plenty of antioxidants for the skin. My favorite product by far is the Rice Bran Powder Wash. I have only tried gel or water-based cleansers before, so the powder wash was new to me. It is one of the gentlest exfoliants I have ever used -- a huge plus for my sensitive skin. It took off my minimal makeup and impurities with no issues.

Pros

  • All-natural ingredients
  • Accessible traditional products and great for sensitive skin
  • Products are available on Coréelle, a K-beauty website that often has deals

Cons

  • Some may not like the sunscreen, as it utilizes a chemical not yet used in the US

Why we like it: Tonymoly has some of the best affordable products, readily available on Amazon and in-store and online at Ulta. I would describe the brand as fun; it plays around with color, and the packing features baby animals. I tested the Green Tea Superlight Daily Defense sunscreen and the Plum Bum Gentle Daily Exfoliating Bar. I love how hydrating and light the sunscreen feels on the skin and how it doesn’t leave any white cast. In addition to green tea extract, it also contains niacinamide, vitamin B and vitamin E.

Pros

  • Offers value sets for more savings
  • Lots of options for oily skin and blemish control
  • Plenty of fun, colorful products for younger audiences

Cons

  • May not appeal to older skin care lovers with mature skin issues

Why we like it: Dr. Althea is one of my new favorite skin care brands, and it gets extra points from me for being clean, vegan and cruelty-free. I tested four Dr. Althea products: a cleanser, two serums and a moisturizer. The standout product has to be the Gentle Vitamin C Serum. It is the gentler version of the popular Vitamin C Serum. The gentle serum is intended to improve dark spots, uneven tone, moisture, elasticity and firmness. It is fast-absorbing, and best of all, I have never had a negative reaction to it.

Pros

  • Designed for sensitive skin
  • Available on Amazon, Soko Glam and Dr. Althea’s website
  • Offers cleansers, toners, toner pads, serums, moisturizers and creams, sheet masks and sunscreen

Cons

  • The collection is smaller compared to other brands
  • Lots of products are often sold out

Why we like it: Superegg is a clean skin care brand that is based in New York but produced in Korea. Its products are made without over 2,700 harmful ingredients such as alcohol, mineral oil, PEGS and artificial dyes. I’m a fan of the Infinite Layers Lip Care lip balm. It’s clear, glossy and hydrating. The lip balm contains peptides that aid in collagen production, smoothing fine lines and plumping. Superegg also offers serums, sheet masks, essences, creams, a cleanser and an eye cream.
Who is it best for: Superegg is great for those who are cautious about the ingredients in their skin care products. The website does a great job of listing each ingredient and the benefits of the main ingredients. It’s also great for those who don’t have a strict budget when it comes to trying new products.

Pros

  • Made without over 2,700 harsh ingredients
  • Products designed to target and treat skin issues
  • The standard shipping cost is the lowest I have reviewed

Cons

  • Not for first-timers on a budget
  • Some products may irritate sensitive skin

Why we like it: Mediheal is known for its toners and toner pads. These products treat and prep the skin for the next steps in your skin care routine (usually, the next step is moisturizer). Toners treat irritation, blemishes, uneven skin tone, dark spots and dull skin. One of my favorite aspects of Mediheal is that it offers seven types of toner pads for different skin types. I was able to test four toners, and I especially liked the Watermide Moisture Pads. It’s the most hydrating of the toners, and I love how cooling it feels on my skin. Best of all, neither toner irritated my skin.

Pros

  • Several toner pads to choose from for various skin issues
  • Suitable for dry, sensitive, oily, normal and combination skin types
  • Readily available at Amazon, Ulta, Soko Glam and Mediheal’s US website

Cons

  • Toner pads and masks are not reusable

What is the best overall Korean skin care brand?

I tested 35 products from 11 different Korean skin care brands. Each offers unique products at differing price points. Depending on your skin type (dry, dull, oily, acne-prone, sensitive or combination) and budget, one brand may work better than the other. Therefore, there is no single best overall Korean skin care brand. All chosen brands on this list are great choices depending on your skin type, skin care needs and budget.

Who is it best for: This brand is great for those with sensitive skin, like me. I haven’t had any reaction to the products that I have tested, and according to my extensive research online in K-beauty forums, this resonates with many others with sensitive skin. Since the brand has so many products to offer, this might be a good brand to try for newcomers.

Who should not get it: Those with acne-prone or extremely oily skin may be a bit wary of some of the oil-based products, especially products that contain coconut oil. It may clog pores or irritate the skin.

Who is it best for: I have found that this K-beauty brand has products for all skin types. While I have had an especially good experience with the hydrating products, there are plenty for those with oily or sensitive skin as well. Oily or acne-prone skin types highly praise the Low pH Good Morning gel cleanser online. I consider Cosrx a great, affordable brand to try out if you're new to Korean skin care.

Who should not get it: Since a lot of Cosrx products use snail mucin, the brand is not for vegans.

Who is it best for: I would recommend this brand to anyone looking to add more hydration and treatment to their skin care routine. Peach and Lily is known for its “glass skin” products, meaning that its skin care lineup is intended to shrink pores, clear texture and redness and brighten and restore the skin’s natural barrier. These products should appeal to dry, combination and sensitive skin types who aren’t stuck to a strict budget.

Who should not get it: Those with oily or acne-prone skin should be cautious when using thick serums and moisturizers from Peach and Lily.

Who is it best for: House of Dohwa’s philosophy is to bring traditional Korean skin care to a wider world audience. So, this brand should appeal to those looking for traditional products that can be easily purchased and shipped to the US. The all-natural and gentle ingredients are ideal for sensitive skin types.

Who should not get it: Oily and acne-prone skin types may want products with ingredients intended for a deeper clean. The brand’s sunscreen is also not for someone looking for a typical American chemical sunscreen. While it does contain UV-protectant properties, the chemicals have not yet been reviewed by the FDA.

Who should not get it: Those with mature or dry skin may need more intense ingredients.

The Pore Refresh Grinding Cleansing Balm is also a great product for removing makeup and impurities without stripping the skin’s natural barrier.

Who should not get it: Those with acne-prone skin may want to avoid the 345 Relief Cream as it may clog pores. I found it to be a bit greasy, and some users have reported having issues with it.

I tested the Hyper Collagen sheet mask, and after 30 minutes, my skin looked and felt softer. I even thought my skin was glowing the next day.

Who should not get it: Mediheal doesn’t offer thick moisturizers, so those with dry skin looking for barrier-repairing products should try another brand.

Other Korean skin care brands we tested

These Korean skin care brands did not make the list, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t offer great products. At the time of writing this article, I have only tested one product from each of these brands. I haven’t spent enough time with each product collection to give an accurate opinion of the brand as a whole. However, here’s what I have tested and my experience.

Glow Recipe: When the Watermelon Glow Niacinamide Dew Drops went viral on social media a few years ago, I gave in to temptation and bought one. I was greatly surprised at how well the dew drops worked at hydrating my dull skin. I still use these drops over makeup, and I love the dewy filter it adds to my skin. I have never broken out from this product, so I would recommend it to those with sensitive skin. One bottle has lasted me a year.

Fruida: I recently tested a Fruida product after receiving it in a beauty subscription box. I was convinced that the small bottle of cream was a sample size, but once I looked it up on Amazon, I realized that it was supposed to be that small. However, you only need a little bit. The gel is supposed to help reduce pore visibility. When applied to my skin without makeup, the gel doesn’t do much. However, I could see a slight difference with it under makeup. It has a strong fruit scent (it is made of green grape extract) that was too harsh for me. However, I haven’t spent enough time with the brand.

Laneige: I am a huge fan of Laneige. However, I have only tested two lip products. I didn’t feel that this was a large enough representation of the whole brand, so Laneige didn’t make the list. Yet, I can vouch for this brand offering high-quality, hydrating lip products. I currently use the Glaze Craze Tinted Polypeptide Lip Serum in shade chocolate frosting. It offers a great tint in addition to hydrating ingredients. Laneige is also very accessible, available on its own website, Amazon and Sephora

How we tested the best K-beauty skin care products

k-beauty products
Caroline Igo/CNET

I have dry, sensitive skin that is prone to eczema flare-ups. When testing, I was careful to space out my time with one product and another so I could determine my skin’s reaction. Products that irritated my skin or broke me out were not mentioned on this list. For each brand, I tested at least two popular products, but I tested around four products for most. My testing considered 35 different products, and I paid attention to consistency, ingredients, scent, price, accessibility, shipping fees and the overall feel of my skin after use.

What to consider when choosing Korean skin care products

Skin type: Your skin type will determine what your skin needs and the best brands or products to try out. Dry skin needs products that prioritize hydration, while oily or acne-prone skin needs to avoid oil-based products or ingredients like coconut oil. Brands often have their products broken into categories based on skin type or skin concern.

Key ingredients: Some ingredients are utilized for hydration, while others offer a brightening effect. Snail mucin, hyaluronic acid, glycerin and niacinamide are examples of some important hydrating ingredients. As for brightening, ingredients like rice, ginseng, vitamin C and propolis can help with uneven tone and dull skin.

Vegan/cruelty-free: Vegan skin care refers to the absence of animal-based ingredients, while cruelty-free means that the product has not been tested on animals. If either is important to you, you will want a product that confirms whether or not it is vegan or cruelty-free.

Cost: Before purchasing any K-beauty skin care products, consider your budget. Some brands are more affordable than others. For example, Tonymoly is a fairly affordable brand, as its sheet masks start at $3.50. However, other luxury brands like House Dowha and Superegg offer products on the higher $50 to $75 end.

Shipping fees: Most K-beauty brands are based in Korea, so buying directly from the websites will include international shipping fees (not including tariffs or duty fees). While some products are available from Sephora, Ulta or Amazon, these retailers may not carry all the brands’ product collections.

Best K-beauty skin care FAQs

What is a Korean skin care routine?

A Korean skin care routine consists of double-cleansing (first with an oil-based cleanser and then a water-based cleanser), followed by using an exfoliator, toner, essence or serum, eye cream or a sheet mask and then a moisturizer. During the day, the routine’s last step is an SPF product. At night, the last step is usually a thicker moisturizer or a nighttime treatment.

Where can I buy Korean skin care?

Korean skin care products can be purchased directly from a brand’s website, but be aware that sites may require international shipping fees. Some select brands and products are available on Amazon, Sephora, Target or Ulta.

Is Korean skin care better?

Korean skin care may be a better option for those with dry skin or those looking for a dewy look. Since Korean skin care prioritizes hydration and repairing the skin’s barrier, the products are often a great choice for those dealing with dullness.

Is Korean skin care sold at Ulta?

Yes, Korean skin care brands are sold at Ulta. You can find brands like Peach and Lily, Tonymoly, Mediheal and Cosrx.

Is K-beauty a Korean brand?
