I did the dirty work -- quite literally -- to find out which all-purpose household cleaners offer the best bang for your buck. I tested an array of cleaners on various surfaces in my home to see which ones cut through food build-up and grime the best, left stainless steel appliances sparkling and streak-free and which ones smelled the best.

Our Picks

Lysol’s All-Purpose Cleaner was the most versatile all-purpose cleaner of the bunch. It is safe for various surfaces throughout your home, including stainless steel, sealed wood, granite, laminate, porcelain and more. It was also my favorite smelling one with a light lemon scent.

Pros

  • Great scent
  • Kills viruses & bacteria without bleach
  • Refill bottles available

Clorox Disinfecting All Purpose Cleaner was neck-and-neck with Lysol All-Purpose Cleaner during our testing. It left no residue when cleaning up grease and grime, and had a pleasant and light lemon scent that wasn’t overpowering. When used on a stainless steel trash can, this cleaner left it sparkling clean with no streaks. I like that this is another bleach-free option, but it still has disinfectant properties and states it kills 99.9% of bacteria and viruses. Unlike our top pick though, it is not included in the EPA's lists of disinfectants that fight against Covid-19 virus or Norovirus.

Pros

  • Bleach-free
  • Light scent
  • Refill bottles available

Bona All-Purpose Cleaner contains 99% “biobased material,” meaning that this cleaner is heavily plant-based. The lavender scent was refreshing and although there are no harsh chemicals, it still cut through dried tomato sauce almost as well as Lysol’s All-Purpose Cleaner and Clorox’s Disinfecting All Purpose Cleaner.

Pros

  • Light, natural scent
  • 99% plant-based ingredients
  • Safer-Choice Certified

Cons

  • Didn’t cut through thick grime as quickly as Clorox and Lysol products
  • No disinfecting properties

If you want a cleaner dedicated solely to glass and stainless steel surfaces throughout your home, Windex Multipurpose cleaner is a good pick. Because it has disinfectant properties, it is also ideal for cleaning areas that are usually magnets for bacteria, such as stainless steel trash cans, appliances, doorknobs and bathroom mirrors. Windex Multipurpose is EPA-certified for fighting the Covid-19 virus and other bacteria.

Pros

  • Cleans without leaving streaks
  • EPA-certified disinfectant

Cons

  • Not recommended to be used on wood surfaces

Cleaning wipes are a favorite for many given their ease of use. I preferred the Clorox Bleach-Free Disinfecting and Cleaning Wipes over other options for daily use because they are bleach-free, textured on one side, which seemed to have helped lift tough grime on surfaces, and had a nice smell. These wipes are convenient to use and are efficient at fighting against various viruses, including Covid-19, according to the EPA.

Pros

  • Texture on wipes
  • EPA-certified for fighting against Covid-19 bacteria

Cons

  • If used on dusty surfaces, they can leave some dust build-up after use that needs to be wiped down with a cloth or paper towel.

From Clorox to Mrs. Meyer’s and everything in between, here’s what to know about choosing the right cleaner for your home, no matter what or where you need to clean.

What is the best overall all-purpose cleaner?

Lysol All-Purpose Cleaner beat out its competition during our testing, making it our No. 1 pick and the best all-purpose cleaner. It cut through dried up tomato sauce on my wood island with ease, cleaned a stainless steel refrigerator without leaving streaks and was a great bathroom disinfectant, too. The bleach-free cleaner and disinfectant is safe for use on various surfaces and left sealed wood, stainless steel, granite, a porcelain sink and a toilet shining during our tests.

This cleaner is an EPA-certified disinfectant that can fight against numerous bacteria and viruses, including the viruses that cause Covid-19 and Norovirus when used as directed. When sprayed on dried tomato sauce on a wood surface during one of our tests, it cleaned the sauce quicker than the others and needed less product -- and elbow grease -- to get the job done.

Either of our top two picks are great for those who want one cleaner that does it all, including disinfecting. From kitchens to living rooms and bathrooms, both Lysol’s All-Purpose Cleaner and Clorox’s Disinfecting All Purpose Cleaner are great options that don’t leave the strong smell of bleach in your home.

How we tested all-purpose cleaners

In addition to testing these cleaners daily for a couple of weeks throughout my home, I also conducted three tests.

Test 1: Tomato Sauce

In my first test, I placed a spoonful of tomato sauce on my wooden island and let it dry for several hours before using the cleaners to see which ones cleaned the sauce the easiest.

I used the same amount of sauce and cleaning product for each to determine which cleaned the best.

Corin Cesaric/CNET

When the sauce was completely dry, I used two squirts of each cleaner directly on the tomato sauce and wiped it down with a paper towel. Immediately, I could tell that the Lysol All-Purpose Cleaner removed the most tomato sauce during the first round. I was also impressed by Clorox Disinfecting All Purpose Cleaner for cleaning up the sauce rather than moving it around on the island like some other cleaners seemed to be doing. (During this test, I did not use the Windex Multisurface cleaner since it is not recommended for wood.)

I then used additional product from each cleaner on the areas until all of the sauce was off of the island. Some of the products that did not make our best list (detailed below) left small specks of tomato sauce and residue that was spread around further on the surface when trying to clean it up. During this test, I was able to see which sprays were able to cut through build-up the best and how each one smelled and sprayed. Although cleaning the tomato sauce required a bit of elbow grease no matter which product I used, some worked much better than others.

Test 2: Stainless Steel

Next, I used the cleaners (this time, including Windex Multisurface) on the stainless steel appliances in my kitchen. Although they all seemed to remove some dust and build-up from the appliances, almost all of them -- besides our top picks -- left streaks behind.

On my dishwasher, the streaks left behind by various cleaners were easily visible after wiping down the surface.

Our top two picks did a great job of cleaning the appliances, but ultimately Windex Multisurface stood out by cleaning and disinfecting stainless steel surfaces without leaving steaks or residue behind. I also used it on glass mirrors and it left them sparkling clean as well.

Lysol All-Purpose Cleaner also did a great job of removing dust and leaving my fridge streak-free.

Test 3: Bathroom

In my bathroom, I used the sprays and wipes to clean the tub, porcelain sink and toilet. During this test, I preferred the performance of the Clorox Disinfecting Wipes over other wipe options and determined which cleaners were the most effective at cutting through dried toothpaste on the sink and soap scum in the tub.

With the results from these three tests, my opinions on the smell of each product and how it went using them multiple times in my home across various weeks, I determined which ones outperformed the others in the aforementioned categories.

Other all-purpose cleaners we tested

Seventh Generation All Purpose Cleaner: This cleaner didn’t cut through the dried tomato sauce the best, but it did have a very pleasant smell and it cleaned up the dusty range hood above my stove nicely. It also meets the EPA’s Safer-Choice Standard.

Clorox EcoClean All-Purpose Cleaner: Although this is another product registered by the EPA as a Safer-Choice product, I was not a fan of its smell or performance in comparison to the other Clorox products I tested.

Clorox EcoClean Disinfecting Wipes: Like the product above, these wipes are a certified Safer-Choice product, but although they can disinfect various bacterias, they are not listed by the EPA as one that can fight the Covid-19 virus, which is why Clorox Bleach-Free Disinfecting and Cleaning Wipes have a slight edge over them. However, if you prefer plant-based wipes with more natural ingredients, these are a great option.

Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day All-Purpose Cleaner: This one smells nice, but it had a hard time cleaning up the tomato sauce, left behind residue and made stainless steel surfaces streaky.

Method All-Purpose Cleaner: This is another one that has a pleasant scent, but it was unable to cut through tough build-up like others. Similar to the Mrs. Meyer’s option above, if you want a light daily cleaner, either could work, but they are not the best option for build-up or deep cleans.

Pledge Multisurface Cleaner: This removed more tomato sauce than I expected, but there was still a bit left behind even after using elbow grease. However, when used on surfaces without food build-up, it did leave them shiny and clean.

To determine which cleaners to test, we only took into account options that were highly rated online.

Corin Cesaric/CNET

365 All-Purpose Cleaner: The spray nozzle created a foamy spray that to me seemed to use a lot more product than needed. It also left behind some tomato sauce on the wooden surface, but my biggest concern regarding this cleaner was wasted product.

The Pink Stuff, Miracle Multi-Purpose Household Cleaner: I’ve previously been a fan of using The Pink Stuff’s Cleaning Paste throughout my home, but I was not as impressed with the multi-purpose cleaner. During our tomato sauce test, it seemed to only move around the sauce rather than actually clean it. Once the majority of the sauce was finally removed, a good amount of residue from it was still leftover on the wooden island.

Amazon Basics Disinfecting Wipes: Although there is nothing terrible about these wipes in regards to performance, I did prefer the texture on the Clorox wipes, and I was unable to find these on the EPA’s lists of certified disinfectants that clean the Covid-19 virus or Norovirus.

FAQs

  • Do all-purpose cleaners also disinfect surfaces?

Some of them do. For example, our top two picks -- Lysol All-Purpose Cleaner and Clorox Disinfecting All Purpose Cleaner -- and Windex Multipurpose and Clorox Bleach-Free Disinfecting and Cleaning Wipes, all have disinfectant properties when used as directed. However, that does not mean they all disinfect the same bacteria and viruses. The EPA has compiled a list of cleaners that disinfect against the Covid-19 virus, which includes our No. 1 pick for the best all-purpose cleaner, Lysol All-Purpose Cleaner.
