Samsung's latest Galaxy Unpacked event on Wednesday included the launches for the new Galaxy Fold 7, Galaxy Flip 7 and Galaxy Watch 8 devices. After teasing an "Ultra" edition of the Galaxy Fold, Samsung has instead transformed this year's Fold with a a thinner and lighter design, a 200-megapixel main camera similar to what we see on the Ultra and raised the phone's price to $2,000. The Flip 7 keeps the $1,100 price that last year's Flip had, but expands its cover screen to 4.1 inches. A bit further down the price spectrum, a new $900 Galaxy Flip 7 FE brings the flip series to a sub-$1,000 price.

Samsung's event is taking place alongside Amazon Prime Day, in which some Samsung devices are getting discounted, but it's likely that the high-end devices announced today aren't getting discounted anytime soon.

While Samsung Unpacked's conference has ended, we will continue to post new updates about the new Galaxy devices as we get them into this live blog. Our coverage from the event is also available below. You can also get more details straight from the show floor in our Galaxy Unpacked live show.

The Galaxy Fold 7's thinness in particular was being shown off, and I was able to compare it with a nearby postcard.

I put a postcard inside the Samsung Galaxy Fold 7 just to see how thin the phone looks. This postcard is a little thicker as it does connect with the phone over NFC.

And while the Flip 7 isn't as thin as the Fold 7, I did the same postcard test with the Flip 7 that's on display.

The Flip 7 is still quite thin, and the phone demo allows for playing with the new 4.1-inch exterior display.

Samsung's Galaxy Flip 7 FE is cheaper, but still a high price

By Mike Sorrentino

The Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE is a lower-cost edition of Samsung's flip phone.

Joe Maldonado/CNET

Samsung's expanding its series of Fan Edition devices to include the Galaxy Flip 7 FE. Historically these have been devices that offer flagship features at a lower, more cost-conscious price tag. But at $900, we're still looking at a high-end phone, despite the FE model being $200 less than the Galaxy Flip 7.

CNET Principal Writer Katie Collins took a deeper dive into the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE's pricing, speaking with one analyst who believes the lower price won't make much of an impact on the market.

We'll have to see how the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE ultimately performs, but currently, Motorola's 2025 Razr comes in significantly lower at $700. I'm looking forward to comparing how these cheaper flip-style Android phones compare when we get to review the Z Flip 7 FE.

That's all, folks! With that, Samsung Unpacked 2025 is over, and there were a lot of announcements, from the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, Z Flip 7 and Flip 7 FE to a trio of smartwatches (the Galaxy Watch 8 Classic, Galaxy Watch 8 and the Galaxy Watch Ultra). As expected, we also saw a lot of AI, including Samsung's AI photo editing assistant and a running coach.

While Samsung Unpacked 2025 announcements are fully unveiled, our coverage here at CNET continues, so stay tuned for more analysis and hot takes.

Samsung and Xealth

By Meara Isenberg

Samsung and Xealth -- a digital health company Samsung acquired that connects hospitals with digital health vendors -- are seeking to create a "bridge between wellness and health care." We don't know the full scope of what this partnership means yet, but presumably, both companies will be making more announcements down the road.

Samsung revealed its new running coach on the Samsung Galaxy Watch 8. The company's Galaxy Watch 8 running coach takes your personal running metrics and translates them into a structured training program. Samsung says that its running coach can provide a training program based on just a 12-minute run, analyzing your fitness levels, then slotting you into one of 10 calibrated training tiers. From there, you can take advantage of over 160 professionally designed training sessions, which Samsung says will adapt to your fitness progress. While training, you'll get real-time coaching. Ugandan long-distance runner Jacob Kiplimo says it's light, comfortable and easy to wear.

Jacob Kiplimo arrived on the stage wearing his own Galaxy Watch 8 after the reveal of the running coach application. His advice for budding runners? Stay disciplined and train consistently. I guess the new Galaxy Watch app will help with that, since it'll place you in your own training tier with tailored exercises to meet you where you are right now.

Phone manufacturers have been leveraging AI for photo editing, like Google's Magic Eraser. Samsung showed off Photo Assist at its annual Unpacked event. The company says that Photo Assist offers an increasingly competent AI-powered editing toolbox, letting you remove unwanted objects, then naturally generating content to fill the void. Samsung also claims that its Photo Assist is more intelligent, with improved capabilities to automatically detect and recommend elements in the background to remove simultaneously. The company touted larger device displays as more useful for photo and video editing on mobile devices.

Samsung devices will get access to Google's Circle for Search feature, which lets you select a part of your phone screen to identify and run a deeper search query on. Google's Gemini AI allegedly recognizes what you circle and helps you get more information about it nearly instantly.

All of the Gemini features shared during this Galaxy Unpacked event are available on your Samsung devices "when you take them out of the box," according to Rick Osterloh, senior vice president of devices and services at Google.

Circle to Search is not limited to Samsung devices; it will be available on other phones as well.

Samsung's One UI 8, the company's overlay on Android, is getting a spotlight. Samsung is announcing that with the Fold 7 and Flip 7, these devices will have the fastest turnaround for getting a new major version of Android onto one of Samsung's new devices. That should mean they will ship with Android 16 out of the box.

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 specs breakdown was preceded by a montage talking about what they want to see in their phones. The consensus? Day-long battery life, a high-resolution camera and a thin design. Samsung has officially unveiled its latest foldable phone -- the aptly named Galaxy Z Fold 7 -- at its annual Samsung Unpacked showcase. The company featured snippets talking about wanting bigger screens, long battery life, great camera quality but a slim and lightweight design. According to Samsung, the Z Fold 7 is the company's thinnest foldable handset yet. Despite its sleek design, Samsung claims that its Z Fold 7 is durable thanks to Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 cover and Victus 2.

Samsung Galaxy Unpacked has started, and the reveals have begun. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is remarkably slim and light, clocking in at a mere 4.2mm thick when open and just 215 grams. Its whopping 200-megapixel wide camera means you can tote around a thin handset without compromising on photo quality. Plus, you'll get the same 4,400-mAh battery as its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Fold 6, which remains promising for daily usage.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Flip 7 FE reveals

By Tyler Graham

Patrick Holland/CNET

Samsung Galaxy Unpacked has started but the reveals have begun. The Galaxy Z Flip 7 builds on its predecessor with a completely redesigned 4.1 inch cover screen and a 6.9-inch main display. Despite having a larger battery, the device is even thinner than 2024's Galaxy Z Flip 6 (although it isn't as thin as the new Galaxy Z Fold 7). This phone will cost you $1,100 when it releases.

But that's not all -- this year, two Galaxy Z Flip phones are making their debut. The Z Flip 7 FE is a slightly more modest and affordable package. It includes the classic 3.4-inch cover screen and a file folder tab cut-out for its cameras. The Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE will cost you $900 when it releases, which is moderately better than the Flip 7, but could still be unaffordable for some folks.

Check out Patrick Holland's hands-on with the device here.

Are camera improvements coming to Samsung Unpacked?

Samsung/Screenshot by Jeff Carlson

The stars of Samsung's Galaxy Unpacked event are rumored to be updates to the Z Fold and Z Flip phones. While I appreciate a good bendable screen, I'm just as interested in the cameras that will be on them. Compared to the Galaxy S25 and Galaxy S25 Ultra models, the lenses on the current Z Flip 6 and Z Fold 6 feel dated.

For example, both of those phones include a 50-megapixel main camera and a 12-megapixel ultrawide camera; the Z Fold adds a 10-megapixel 2x telephoto. You can still get good photos from them, don't get me wrong. But if you're paying a premium for a phone -- $1,900 for the Z Fold 6 -- I believe you should expect a premium camera experience, too.

The traditional argument for limiting the cameras has been space. Physical room is so premium in a foldable phone that many camera assemblies just won't fit. But then I look at the Galaxy S25 Edge, which worked in a slimmed-down 200 megapixel f/1.7 camera with the same specs as the main camera in the S25 Ultra, and did it in a thin 5.8mm frame (though the camera bump protrudes to 10mm). Megapixels aren't the whole story, but having more opens up options such as getting optical-quality telephoto images without invoking digital zoom. And the photos from the S25 Edge are pretty nice.

Hopefully, Samsung will boost the ultrawide cameras in each new phone to at least 50 megapixels and maybe even the telephoto, too. Motorola's 2025 Razr shows it can be done. Will Samsung match or even exceed these specs? We'll find out Wednesday.

Galaxy Watch 8 and Galaxy Watch 8 Classic rumors

By Meara Isenberg
Samsung watch
Samsung/CNET

There's still plenty of mystery surrounding the new smartwatches we might see at Samsung Unpacked. But rumors about the next-gen wearables are out there. According to Tom's Guide, pictures shared by leaker Evan Blass suggest that in addition to the Galaxy Watch 8, the July 9 event could bring a new Classic model and a 2025 Galaxy Watch Ultra sporting fresh colors.

The new Classic watch would align with preexisting launches every two years of the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic (2023) and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic (2021). There's plenty to speculate about on the smartwatch front, but we have a better picture when it comes to new features Samsung could detail at the event. According to a deep dive by CNET's Vanessa Hand Orellana, tools like a noninvasive blood test and personalized sleep and fitness coaching are expected to make their official debut alongside the next Galaxy watch.

Don't expect Samsung Galaxy Buds 4 at Samsung Unpacked

While summer is usually when Samsung unveils its next generation of earbuds to prime the fall and winter shopping seasons, we won't be seeing the Galaxy Buds 4, according to Dutch site Galaxy Club (via SamMobile). Instead, it seems Samsung's next generation of in-ear headphones will land in 2026, alongside next year's Galaxy S26 series of devices. Other than that, not much else is known about the Buds 4. Considering the Galaxy Buds 3 reviewed well last year, and landed on our best wireless earbuds list, it still wasn't good enough to beat the Sony WF-1000XM5

How will Samsung's rumored foldables hold up against Motorola's lineup?

By Tyler Graham
Motorola Razr Ultra 2025

Motorola's Razr Ultra.

James Martin/CNET

Samsung may be the global heavyweight champion when it comes to foldable phones, but Motorola has been gobbling up an impressive share of the market in recent years. Motorola's $1,300 Razr Ultra might be more expensive than the $1,100 Galaxy Z Flip 6, but its day-long battery life and 4-inch cover screen show how far clamshell foldables have come, with Motorola pushing the niche forward alongside Samsung.

Between the Ultra, the standard 2025 Razr and the Razr Plus, Motorola has carved out a solid position for itself in the foldable market. In particular, Motorola has reported over the years that roughly 20% of its userbase comes to the Razr line from an iPhone. We'll likely see Samsung respond in kind with their own 2025 lineup of foldable phones during Wednesday's event. A new Galaxy Z Flip 7, some type of "Ultra" edition of the Galaxy Fold and potentially even a tri-fold phone from Samsung are all possibilities.

Will we get a peek at Project Moohan, Google and Samsung's XR project?

By David Lumb
A VR headset by Samsung with a black glass front and a visor and strap

Project Moohan is a familiar-looking mixed reality-enabled VR headset. It'll be the first Android XR-enabled product next year.

Samsung

Samsung has been working with Google on Project Moohan, a mixed reality headset that brings Gemini AI along for the ride on your digital journeys. We haven't heard how far along development is with the device, so we aren't exactly expecting it to debut at Samsung Unpacked. But with Google's mixed reality operating system Android XR intended to launch sometime this year, and a Samsung headset following by the end of 2025, we anticipate seeing some news about Moohan.

When CNET Editor at Large Scott Stein tried out the latest version of Project Moohan in December, he found that the Gemini AI chatbot acted like a companion while he ventured through different apps like Chrome and YouTube, answering his questions and commenting on searches. Stein's chat with Android XR head Shahram Izadi during Google I/O back in May affirmed that Moohan is a first step in using the software to open up a larger ecosystem with Gemini AI in smart headsets or glasses augmenting smartphones and other devices. Unpacked could be our first big look at what Moohan has to offer consumers.

Will Samsung reveal a triple-screen foldable?

By David Lumb
samsung-display-demo-concept-flexible-oled-5234
James Martin/CNET

Samsung has been releasing foldables for half a decade and refined its designs to iron out a lot of the early durability issues, resulting in pretty reliable dual-screen Z Fold and Z Flip phones coming out every year. But a new rumor suggests that Samsung could be gearing up to release a triple-display foldable this year, too.

Samsung has been showing off concept devices with tri-fold screens at CES for the past few years, but it was never clear when (or if) the company would transition those ideas into a market-ready product. Three screens are obviously more complex than two, and Samsung's concepts show various ways those displays could fold together in different approaches. But with Huawei releasing its Mate XT Ultimate Design tri-fold in February, the clock has been ticking for Samsung to release its own device.

Galaxy Fold's thin and light future

Lisa Eadiccico/CNET

Samsung's prior Galaxy Fold phones can unfold to reveal a larger, tablet-style display, but they're a bit thick when folded up to use as a standard phone. That appears to be changing, with Samsung teasing that Wednesday's Unpacked event will include a thinner Galaxy Fold.

In an interview with CNET Senior Editor Abrar Al-Heeti, Samsung Senior Vice President Drew Blackard said upcoming foldable phones should look very similar to standard flagship phones that don't fold.

"More than ever, these devices will very much resemble that traditional form factor," Blackard said. "It'll feel like a traditional bar-type smartphone, but it'll have all of the benefits of a foldable."

Check out the full interview story, which includes comments on how Samsung plans to create an "aha" moment to bring new customers over to foldable phones.

Samsung Unpacked 2025 rumors: Multiple versions of foldable phones, a budget Z Flip 7 and smartwatches

By Moe Long

James Martin/CNET

There's been a lot of buzz around Samsung Unpacked 2025, and we suspect foldable phones will take the spotlight. With the excitement over Unpacked comes a slew of rumors. A press release from Samsung teases the Galaxy Z Fold 7, and there may be multiple versions -- including a premium Ultra variant, with 91mobiles reporting on possible Galaxy Z Fold 7 model and processor specs. While we expect Samsung to release the Galaxy Z Flip 7, there may be a more affordable version, the Z Flip 7 FE, or Fan Edition.

Aside from folding and flipping phones, we're predicting there may be some news on the wearable front, whether that's the Galaxy Watch 8 or a high-end Galaxy Watch Ultra in a new color. Dr. Hon Pak, Samsung's senior vice president and head of digital health, revealed to CNET's Vanessa Hand Orellana that the company wants to position its wearable tech as more personalized for coaching and analyzing signs of aging.
