2020 Ford Explorer is better in almost every way

The all-new 2020 Ford Explorer moves on to a new rear-wheel platform shared with the Lincoln Aviator. 

Compared to the outgoing Explorer, the sixth-generation model has a 6.3-inch longer wheelbase that Ford says gives it best-in-class first- and second-row hip room and top second- and third-row headroom. 

Cargo capacity is also at the head of the segment, offering 87.8 cubic feet of space with the second- and third-row seats folded.

For the first time, the Explorer will be able to carry 4x8 sheets of plywood.

Rear-wheel drive is standard, while a rear-biased all-wheel-drive system with axle disconnect is available as an option.

Replacing the old 3.5-liter V6 base engine is a turbocharged 2.3-liter four with 300 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque.

A new 10-speed automatic transmission comes standard on all Explorers, helping to improve fuel efficiency and driving range.

A 3.0-liter, twin-turbo V6 powers range-topping Platinum models with 365 horses and 380 pound-feet of torque. Tow capacity is rated at 5,600 pounds with the V6 engine.

Inside, an updated Sync 3 system handles infotainment with a 10.1-inch portrait touchscreen available.   

The 2020 Ford Explorer will go on sale this summer carrying a $33,860 base price tag.
