Apple unveils new iPads, MacBooks, and releases Mavericks (pictures)

Apple CEO Tim Cook kicks off an event in San Francisco on Tuesday. The company showcased new products, including the iPad Air, an iPad Mini with Retina Display, and new MacBook Pros. Check out all of today's Apple news.

The Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, where Apple held its event Tuesday.

Craig Federighi, Apple's Mac and iOS software chief, talks about OS X Mavericks.

Federighi points to OpenCL, which can speed up some tasks by 1.8x or higher.

Apple released Mavericks today for free.

Phil Schiller introduces the new 13-inch MacBook Pro, which is now 3.46 pounds.

The 13-inch model also gets up to 9 hours of battery life.

Schiller talks up the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models.

Next is the Mac Pro, assembled in the US.

This is "the future of the pro desktop," Schiller says.

The Mac Pro starts at $2,999 and will be available in December.

Next up is Eddy Cue, Apple's iTunes and App Store chief, talking iLife changes.

Cue says iPhoto, iMovie, and Garageband are also getting reworked for iOS 7, and new versions of those same three apps for the Mac as well.

The apps will be free with the purchase of any new Mac or IOS device. And all those updates are going out today.

Cue gives the audience the lowdown on updates to Garageband.

Cue wraps up his presentation on iLife updates.

Now on to iWork.

Pages, Numbers, and Keynotes have gotten reworked for iOS 7, and now completely rewritten for the Mac.

Cue says iWork now has "full file compatibility."

Cue moves on to Keynote.

Apple unveils the iPad Air, thinner and lighter than the previous full-size iPad.

And inside is the A7 chip, the same chip that's in the iPhone 5S.

Schiller points out how much CPU performance has improved since the original iPad.
