Huawei's glass and metal Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro

With its glass back, large screen and powerful octa-core processor, Huawei's new Mate 10 series has Samsung's Note 8 firmly in its sights.

The Mate 10 Pro, pictured here is the flagship of the bunch and is the only one you'll find on sale in the UK. 

Beyond its 6-inch display, you'll find the latest Kirin 970 processor, a dual camera that shoots in colour and black and white and IP67 waterproofing.

At around £700 in the UK and AU$1,099 (that converts to $920), this phone isn't cheap, but solid all round performance makes it a good option to consider.

The display has extremely narrow bezels around the side, meaning this large phone is still quite comfortable to hold. 

On the Mate 10 Pro, there's no home button on the bottom. 

There's not much bezel at the top either.

The fingerprint scanner has been moved to the back.

Note the dual camera lenses. A 12-megapixel sensor shoots in colour, while the second 20-megapixel sensor only takes shots in black and white.

There's no 3.5mm headphone jack. Instead, you'll have to use bluetooth headphones or wired headphones with a USB-C jack.

The camera interface is easy to use.

Huawei's P10 has a similar dual-camera setup and I've been pleased with the quality of black and white images. I'm hoping for similar results here.

Huawei says the processor is much better at recognising objects in scenes, meaning the auto mode can select the best settings for your photos.

There's a pro mode too, if you want to take manual control over settings.

It runs the latest Android Oreo software.

It charges with USB-C and is IP67 rated waterproof.

The standard Mate 10 is not waterproof, however.

Huawei says it was too difficult to make the 3.5mm headphone jack on the standard Mate 10 waterproof.

Both phones have the dual camera setup.

They both have glass backs, although this is just for aesthetic reasons. Unlike the iPhone 8, Huawei hasn't used glass to allow for wireless charging.

I like the Mate 10 Pro in this brown colour.

The glass has apparently been reinforced.

The standard Mate 10 has a 5.9-inch display.

It also has a fingerprint scanner built into the home button beneath the screen.

Both phones have 8-megapixel front-facing cameras.
