Apple's glassy iPhone 8 is all glossed up

2017's new iPhones are here. Aside from the special iPhone X, that is -- we have a few more weeks to wait for that. In the meantime, Apple has the successor to its regular flagship, the iPhone 8. For much more, read CNET's iPhone 8 review.

Though the new iPhone looks generally the same as last year, it flaunts a new steel-reinforced glass back.

The device has a 4.7-inch LCD display with a 1,334x750-pixel resolution and 325 pixels per inch.

The phone is rated IP67 dust- and water-resistant, meaning it can survive being fully submerged underwater. 

Powering the phone is Apple's proprietary, 64-bit A11 Bionic chip processor.

Apple also has the larger iPhone 8 Plus (right), which has a 5.5-inch screen.

The 8 Plus is water resistant too.

The iPhone 8 has a Lightning connector for charging, transferring files and listening to music -- no headphone jack again. 

According to Apple, the iPhone 8's battery lasts about as long as last year's iPhone 7. Expect about 14 hours of talk time and 13 hours of video playback.

New to iPhones, however, is wireless charging. Now you can place the iPhone on a Qi wireless charging pad to give your battery some juice.

The phone measures 5.45 by 2.65 by 0.29 inches (138 by 67 by 7.3mm) and weighs 5.22 ounces (148 grams). Click through to see pictures of the iPhone's edges.

At the iPhone 8's launch, Apple also unveiled the Apple Watch Series 3, a smartwatch with LTE connectivity for voice calls and streaming.

Both the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, as well as the Watch Series 3, can charge wirelessly.

The phone comes in two storage capacities: 64GB and 256GB.

On the back is a 12-megapixel camera with optical image stabilization.

The phone can record supersharp 4K video, as well as slow-motion videos at 1080p at 120 or 240 frames per second.

You can also record time-lapse video.

The phone has an f1.8 aperture and can digitally zoom up to 5x.

On the front is a 7-megapixel camera with 1080p HD video recording.

The new iPhones run Apple iOS 11. The updated OS has deep software support for augmented reality apps and games.

Unlike the iPhone X, the iPhone 8 still has a physical home button below the display.

Though iOS 11 has many new features, the overall interface looks the same.

Siri does get a refresh, however. It will suggest follow-up questions, has more translation languages and be available for more third-party apps.

The iPhone 8 (right) comes in gold, silver (pictured here) and space gray. It does not come in jet black, as last year's iPhone 7 did.
