Photos: Jobs fill-in touts media, MacBook updates

iLife '09 adds several new features to existing technology. An iLife utility called iPhoto previously let you sort digital photos by events. Now you can also sort them based on the people in them and where they were taken.

With the new Faces feature, a sublink off the library, you can sort photos by person with something called Face Detection. One you've tagged someone's face with their name, Face Detection allows you to easily find all photos that feature that person.

The Places feature in iPhoto works with geotagging features in the iPhone and GPS-enabled cameras to identify where photos have been taken. iPhoto assigns pins on a map view to the photos that have geotagging support. You can click on one of the pins to see all of your photos associated with that location.

Apple's video-editing software, iMovie, is getting several new features in its latest incarnation.

Randy Ubillos, who created the new version of iMovie, edits a project while demonstrating the software. New features include a precision editor, a drag-and-drop feature that lets you layer movies, new themes, animated travel maps, and video stabilization.

The third element of iLife '09 is GarageBand '09. Schiller discussed only one aspect of GarageBand in Tuesday's presentation. That was the Learn to Play feature, which teaches people how to play the guitar or keyboard.

A built-in store in the Learn to Play software lets you download lessons given by celebrities for $4.99. Here, John Fogerty demonstrates how to play "Proud Mary" and talks about the history of the song.

Schiller also spent some time talking about updates to iWork, Apple's productivity suite. Those include added features in Keynote, the presentation utility.

Keynote Remote brings presentations to the iPhone or iPod Touch. Apple has created an iPhone application that lets you advance slides by flicking them back or forward in Cover Flow mode, with a wireless connection to your Mac. That's available for 99 cents in the App Store.

Another iWork utility, the word-processing tool called Pages, got a full-screen view, which lets you hide other applications behind the text so you can focus on your writing. Pages also has outline capabilities and allows you to toggle back and forth between the outline and full text of your project.

People can now purchase iLife, iWork, and the Leopard operating system in one Mac Box Set, which costs $169 and will be available in late January, as soon as iLife is complete.

Apple announced a new Web service, iWork.com, which makes iWork projects available and shareable online. It will launch in beta form Tuesday.

The 17-inch MacBook Pro announced on Tuesday has the glass trackpad used on the latest line of MacBooks and has all the same gestures.

The 17-inch model is the thinnest MacBook Pro yet.

Apple is using a new type of battery that it says will allow the notebook to get between seven and eight hours of battery life, depending on which graphics chip is running. To get that technology into the notebook, however, Apple had to make the battery completely enclosed within the chassis.

Apple will now offer DRM-free tracks from all four of the major music labels: EMI, Sony BMG, Universal Music, and Warner Music. iTunes Plus offers 8 million DRM-free tracks today, and will add 2 million more by the end of this quarter.

Apple has the Wi-Fi iTunes Store currently on the iPhone, and now you'll be able to do that over the 3G cellular networks for the same prices as in the regular iTunes store, with the same selection. You can preview and purchase music from the iTunes store, and of course, you can sync it to your computer.
