Surface Studio all-in-one has the thinnest LCD ever made, plus a new Dial gadget

Microsoft has announced its newest hardware, the Surface Studio, which has a 28-inch touchscreen and an Intel Core i7 processor onboard. It will be available for $3,000. Microsoft offers the Surface Dial as an optional $99 accessory.

The internals include an Intel Core i7 processor in addition to an Nvidia 980M graphics chip.

The new PixelSense display is 28 inches across. At 13.5 million pixels, it offers 63 percent more pixels than a 4K television.

The display is 12.5 millimeters thick and weighs 13 pounds. Microsoft says a series of hinges makes the screen adjustable forward, backward and down as if it were weightless.

The Surface Studio is designed for graphics professionals and includes support for the DCI-P3 color space.

The $99 Surface Dial offers "easy access to shortcuts, controls, drawing tools and more." It can also adjust the device's volume.

The Dial lets you scroll through web pages or Word documents.

You can edit, rotate and manipulate objects in supported graphics applications.

The Studio offers a mic array and an HD camera that can also support the Cortana digital assistant.

The LCD layer of the screen is only 1.3 mm thick.

Inputs include an SD card reader plus USB.

The Surface Studio will be available in "limited quantities" in time for the holidays.

Placing the Dial on the screen brings up customized graphics, including a rotate overlay.
