This Kenmore fridge has a few tricks up its sleeve (pictures)

The Kenmore 78022 is a bargain-priced bottom freezer fridge with a lot going for it -- click through to see what we mean.

Open the 78022, and you'll find 22.1 cubic feet of storage space, 14.8 of which are allocated to the fridge.

There aren't any flashy features tucked away inside, but there are plenty of user-friendly design touches. Double crisper bins with independent humidity controls are a nice addition at this price.

Even better: a third bin down below called the "Pantry Drawer" -- it runs the width of the fridge and glides in and out smoothly.

The main shelves in the fridge are spill-proof, which can definitely come in handy when things get messy.

You'll also find sliding plastic dividers sitting in the in-door shelves. They'll help you section things off to your liking.

The butter bin is plenty big, and the shelf next to it even folds up and out of the way to make room for tall items in the door, like wine bottles.

The fridge and freezer compartments each get their own dedicated temperature controls. You can adjust both on this digital display.

The swinging freezer door is a disappointment -- a drawer-style freezer door would have been much easier to work with.

Here are the average temperatures in each region from a three-day test with the fridge set at 37 F and the freezer set at zero. It's a solid, steady result.

Looking at the graph from that test, you can see that everything falls within a tight span of about seven degrees. The main fridge shelves (the blue lines) don't ever rise above 40, and the door temperatures (the green lines) don't get too warm, either.

Performance was even better with the fridge dialed down to 33 degrees.

We didn't have any trouble fitting our standardized load of groceries into the 78022.

There was plenty of room left over for bulky items, and even more so once we reconfigured the shelves to our liking. Out of six stress test items, we were able to fit five in at once: a cake tray, an extra-large pizza box, a pitcher, the party platter there on the bottom shelf...

...and also this casserole dish, which fit neatly into the Pantry Drawer at the bottom of the fridge.
