Pioneer SPHERA in a vehicle dashboard
Pioneer

Soon, almost anyone will be able to upgrade their commute with immersive spatial audio. At CES 2026, Pioneer unveiled its new Sphera aftermarket receiver, which it calls the world’s first aftermarket receiver to add Dolby Atmos playback via Apple CarPlay to the car you already own with the speakers already installed.

Over the past year, I’ve become a spatial audio believer after experiences with Dolby Atmos in Rivian, Cadillac and Volvo cars. Hundreds of albums, audiobooks and podcasts have been remastered for Atmos (with new ones being added constantly) and are available on streaming services like Apple Music, Tidal and Amazon Music. Spatial audio literally adds a whole new dimension to music, and I’ve been enjoying rediscovering many of my favorite albums via the tech. However, not everyone wants to (or is able to) buy a new car just to upgrade their listening experience. This is where the Sphera comes in.

The Pioneer Sphera is a tablet-style receiver that floats a large 10.1-inch display over a single-DIN installation footprint, which opens up compatibility for installation in a wide range of vehicles -- though newer vehicles with deeply integrated large touchscreens of their own may require more effort to install. After connecting an iPhone via wireless Apple CarPlay, the unit can decode and play back Dolby Atmos content via an audio streaming app that supports it.

Most Dolby Atmos vehicles also feature large numbers of speakers for accurate audio positioning, but during my visit to CES 2026, Pioneer told me that Sphera is able to re-create the experience using the speakers already in your car. After installation, you’ll have to tune the system using Pioneer’s Pure Autotuning calibration software, which uses microphones to sense the specific acoustics of the speakers and interior of your car to create accurate surround sound timing with the four-channel setup found in most passenger cars.

Pioneer says the processing is so good that it eliminates the need for a center channel, but it also tells me that if you decide to upgrade your car’s speakers in the future (or add additional channels), a quick recalibration will make the Atmos experience even better.

Aside from its world-first boast, Sphera promises to be a full-featured aftermarket receiver, featuring wireless  Android Auto and Bluetooth connectivity to the party, albeit without spatial sweetening. The Pioneer Sphera will be available to order starting this spring for $1,300 before installation costs.
