What is the best Apple Watch Series 9 case overall?

Each new generation of the Apple Watch that comes along has proven to be more durable and hardy than the last. However, that doesn't mean they're impervious to damage. Not all Apple Watches are rugged like the Apple Watch Ultra, so enough force (which doesn't need to be much) can still leave a ding. Even knowing this, Apple doesn't make and sell cases for its smartwatches like it does for its iPhones, making it difficult to find the best Apple Watch case options around. A few models do stand out, which is why they're at the top of this list. These include the LifeProof Eco-Friendly and the Element Special Ops, both of which offer great protection and comfortable wear.

Our Picks

Made from 85% recycled ocean plastic, the LifeProof Case for Apple Watch 9 easily slips over your Watch's bezel and lives up to its "form-fitting" billing. It comes in four colors that play well with Apple's various band colors (LifeProof also sells eco-friendly Apple Watch bands).

Pros

  • Made with recycled materials
  • Durable yet comfortable
  • Excellent color selection
  • Band options included
  • Lifetime warranty

Cons

  • Slightly bulky
  • No screen protector included

Available in black or green, Element's Special Ops Watch Band integrates a case and band in the same accessory. It's got a military vibe and seems durable, offering "double-reinforced" construction and good screen protection with an option to put a band over the middle of the Watch's screen. That said, it's lighter than it looks and comfortable to wear.

Pros

  • Case and band included
  • Durable
  • Light, comfortable design

Cons

  • Tricky to put on
  • Pricey
  • Limited color options

My colleague Jared DiPane bought this affordable band-and-case combo, which is available in multiple colors for less than $10. He reports: "The Kaihand Apple Watch band with a built-in bumper case offers great protection for the edges and front of my Apple Watch while also giving it a unique style. I've always been a G-Shock fan and this gives me some of that style to combine with the smarts of my Apple Watch."

Pros

  • Fun, colorful design options
  • Affordable
  • Band and watch included

Cons

  • May be slightly uncomfortable
  • Clear cases may discolor over time

Catalyst has long made attractively designed rugged cases for the iPhone and its Active Defense Vibe band with an integrated case offers decent protection in a slim design. It's easy to get your Watch in and out of the case and the band is well-designed and comfortable to wear.

Pros

  • Case and band integration
  • Slim yet protective design
  • Comfortable wear

Cons

  • More expensive than other options
  • Difficult to put on and take off

Spigen's Rugged Armor case offers more protection than its Ultra Hybrid case. It wraps partially around the bottom of your Watch 9 but allows for wireless charging. It's easy to slip in and out of the case but you do have to take your band off to get it in the case.

Pros

  • Wireless charging compatible
  • Affordable
  • Raised bezels allow for extra screen protection

Cons

  • No screen protector
  • Text is upside down if worn on the left hand

The Spigen Ultra Hybrid is a slim, translucent cover for your Watch 9. It's not super protective but will prevent your bezel from getting scratched up.

Pros

  • Affordable
  • Slim, sleek design

Cons

  • Not super protective
  • May interrupt screen responsiveness

Many third-party manufacturers create cases for your Apple Watch Series 9, for both the smaller 41mm and the larger 45mm Apple watch models of that generation. Not even the best Apple Watch case will make your Watch 9 indestructible, or even completely prevent damage to the screen, but getting one is still a good idea if you want to provide some extra protection to your Watch without adding much bulk. That being the case, grabbing a reasonably rugged case with tempered glass screen protector is a pretty good idea.

We've tried out every item listed below and we will continue to add more to our best Apple Watch case list as we test more top Watch Series 9 cases.

I had to watch an instructional video from Element to figure out how to get my Watch 9 into the case, but it's a straightforward process once you see how it's done. I actually dropped my watch on the pavement (face down on the screen) as I was trying to put the band around my wrist. I'm happy to report my watch survived and was undamaged so the case definitely works.

Spigen also makes the Rugged Armor Pro that integrates a watch band for $7 more but is otherwise similar.

Factors to consider when buying a Watch Series 9 case

Budget

Before anything else, you'll want to figure out how much you're willing to spend on a Watch Series 9 case. Value-priced cases continue to improve, so you can find a decent case for less than $15. But if you're looking for a more premium model, you'll likely have to pay more than $40 and even more for case and band combinations.

Protection

If you have the ideal case on, you can protect your watch -- and your heart -- from some damage. Because not only is that great for keeping your watch safe, but it also helps retain trade-in (or sale) value when it's time to upgrade your watch to the new Series 10.

Size

Your perfect Apple Watch Series 9 case should match the size you bought -- either 41-millimeter or 45-millimeter. Keep in mind that a case for one size won't fit the other, so picking up a case with the right size matters for the protection of your watch.

Do you want a clear case?

Clear cases are popular because they show off your Apple Watch (and its color). Clear cases, especially cheaper ones, can become less clear over time and slowly start to yellow. Many case makers now add UV protection to their clear cases to prevent yellowing.

How we test Apple Watch cases

Several of the cases on this list were previously available for the Apple Watch Series 8 models and we added them to the list based on our previous testing with the Watch 8. Typically, we try to use the case on the watch for at least a day and make sure the buttons on the watch work properly with the case on. With some watch cases, we use them for several days or even weeks to see how they wear over time.

  • Design: We evaluate the more superficial and cosmetic aspects of cases and consider how aesthetically pleasing they are because people sometimes buy cases solely for their colors and artwork.
  • Durability: We look at how durable a case is, paying particular attention to corner and crown protection (raised corners on a case can help your watch survive face-down falls).
  • Extra features: Some Apple Watch cases have extra features such as an integrated watch band, included screen protectors, and rugged protection for outdoor adventures.
  • Long-term testing: Although we don't do long-term testing for most cases, we do use some of the most popular cases for longer periods to gauge how they wear over time and see how well our watch holds up during accidental drops with the case on it. We don't do formal drop tests.

Apple Watch Series 9 FAQ

Do I need a case for my Apple Watch Series 9?

The short answer is no, the Apple Watch doesn't need a case, and yes, some folks prefer to keep their Apple Watch uncovered. It is risky, as one drop on the wrong surface (like pavement) could mean a cracked screen or cracked back or dented corner. You can pay for insurance for your watch -- it's fairly pricey -- so you can get it replaced or fixed cheaply should something happen to it.

I never get insurance and just buy a decent case instead. Having a case on your watch won't prevent you from losing it but it does greatly reduce the risk of damaging it.

How protective of a case should I buy?

I like cases that aren't too thick but offer decent drop protection, with a lip over the edge of the screen (sometimes referred to as a "screen bumper") and raised corners that help prevent your screen from cracking if your watch should fall face down.

The good news is that you don't have to buy a super protective Apple Watch case like the Catalyst Active Defense to get good protection. Most cases are reasonably thin and still offer solid drop protection. I did include one very thin case on this list -- the Spigen Ultra Hybrid -- for those who prefer minimal protection. Before you go with a case like that, just remember how much your watch costs -- but it is better than having no case at all.

How do I find my Apple Watch size?

If you're looking to buy a case and wondering which size you'll need, there are two options to. First, you can check the back of your Apple Watch where the size will be engraved around the round sensor in the middle of your watch. You can also look in your Apple Watch app where it will say the size in the General > About section.
