Sprint sends out Pocket PC-based phone

Sprint PCS on Monday began selling a cell phone that uses Microsoft Windows-powered Pocket PC 2002 software and an embedded modem from Sierra Wireless. The phone, manufactured by Toshiba and marketed by Audiovox, is similar to the "Thera," a combination PDA (personal digital assistant) and cell phone that Verizon Wireless began selling in January.

Sprint PCS also announced new offerings Monday, such as sports updates from InfoSpace, that use software based on Sun Microsystems' Java 2 Micro Edition--a version of Java for phones.
