WorldCom gets amended ticker symbol

Shares of the company and its MCI unit, which were halted for trading Wednesday after WorldCom disclosed a $3.8 billion accounting scandal, are listed under new ticker symbols.

Shares of WorldCom Group and its MCI unit, which were halted for trading Wednesday after WorldCom disclosed a $3.8 billion accounting scandal, are listed under new ticker symbols, the Nasdaq said Thursday.

WorldCom will trade under the ticker symbol WCOME instead of its normal WCOM. MCI will trade under symbol MCITE instead of its prior MCIT.

The letter "E" is added to companies that are delinquent in their filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, a Nasdaq spokesman said.

The spokesman declined to comment on when the stocks might reopen for trading.

The stocks were halted Wednesday at 4:42 a.m. PDT after the Nasdaq requested additional information from both companies tied to WorldCom's disclosures late Tuesday that it planned a massive restatement of its 2001 and 2002 results to losses instead of profits.

WorldCom last traded at a price of 83 cents. MCI traded at $1.68.
