I’ve heard people claim that MacOS is virus-proof but that’s not quite true. Any operating system can be infected with viruses and other malware. MacOS gets infected less often than Windows because its smaller market share means fewer people are making viruses for it -- but malware for MacOS has surged in the past few years. Accordingly, it’s important to protect your Mac with antivirus software.

Our Picks

XProtect comes pre-installed and configured on every MacOS device, like the MacBook Pro, MacBook Air and Mac Mini. You don’t need to enable anything or fiddle with any settings to make it work. XProtect is updated daily to ensure protection against all new threats, and automated scans are run with every update. You don’t get much control over the settings -- or the scan schedule -- but you can count on it to provide continuous protection without slowing down your device.

Pros

  • Comes pre-installed and enabled on MacOS devices
  • Runs continuously in the background without slowing down most MacOS devices
  • Performs automated scans on a regular basis, including any time software is updated

Cons

  • No ability to run manual scans
  • No ability to schedule manual scans
  • Only antivirus -- no parental controls, identity theft insurance or other cybersecurity tools

Bitdefender Ultimate Security for MacOS detected 100% of threats when tested by AV-Test in December 2024. Furthermore, Bitdefender uses minimal resources, causing fewer slowdowns of standard programs and file transfers than other antivirus tools. It did slow down software installation, but the slowdown rate was on par with other third-party antivirus software for MacOS. This means your computer should run smoothly while Bitdefender is working. You can also use it to run manual scans and schedule scans, giving you more control over your security than XProtect.

Pros

  • Excellent protection with minimal resource usage
  • Can run manual scans and schedule scans
  • Password manager
  • VPN
  • Adblock and anti-tracker protocols
  • Identity monitoring
  • Identity theft protection, including insurance, on higher-tier plans

Cons

  • Only protects up to five devices
  • Firewall protection isn’t available for MacOS

AV-Test found that Norton 360 for MacOS had a 100% malware detection rate in December 2024. Norton’s antivirus also has minimal impact on system resources, with no detrimental effect on download speed and only mild effects on application speed and file transfer, so you won’t notice a major change in how your computer operates.

Pros

  • Excellent malware detection
  • Cloud backups for your most sensitive data
  • Password manager on all plans
  • VPN on most plans
  • Parental controls available on some plans
  • Privacy monitoring and identity theft protection available on most expensive plan
  • Protection for up to 10 devices

Cons

  • 10-device protection only available on highest-tier plan
  • Doesn’t offer the same level of identity theft insurance

ANTIVIRUS DEALS OF THE WEEK

Deals are selected by the CNET Group commerce team, and may be unrelated to this article.

We’ve spent the past few months researching top antivirus tools to help you find the best one for your Mac.

What is the best antivirus for Mac right now?

The best antivirus for MacOS is its built-in security suite: Gatekeeper, Notarization and XProtect. Gatekeeper scans apps from the app store and blocks anything suspicious. Notarization seeks Mac-approved signatures in program downloads and warns you if they’re not found. XProtect blocks suspicious downloads of all file types, plus fishy updates to existing programs. Together, these tools provide ample protection for most Mac users. However, you won’t get to control when they scan your computer.

Bitdefender Ultimate Security is your best bet if you want complete control over your antivirus scans. Bitdefender’s antivirus for MacOS received top marks from AV-Test in December 2024, with 100% detection of malware and zero false positives. Bitdefender Ultimate Security can protect up to five devices, including support for iOS, Android and Windows in addition to MacOS. While XProtect is great for standard antivirus protection, Bitdefender offers goodies for parents with its social media privacy manager and VPN, and you can choose a higher-tier plan to get identity theft protection if you have assets you’d like to guard.

Best antivirus for Mac

Why we like it

XProtect comes pre-installed and configured on every MacOS device, like the MacBook Pro, MacBook Air and Mac Mini. You don’t need to enable anything or fiddle with any settings to make it work. XProtect is updated daily to ensure protection against all new threats, and automated scans are run with every update. You don’t get much control over the settings -- or the scan schedule -- but you can count on it to provide continuous protection without slowing down your device.

There are no recent third-party tests for XProtect, making it difficult to say for certain how effective it is. However, only 6% of malware infections in 2022 were on MacOS devices. While part of this is because there’s less malware created for MacOS, it suggests that the protection provided by XProtect (and other MacOS security measures) is excellent.

Who it’s best for

XProtect is a great choice for the average MacOS user because it’s free and works smoothly in the background from the moment you boot up MacOS, providing reliable antivirus protection. However, it only offers antivirus so you may want to consider a third-party security suite if you need parental controls, identity theft protection or antivirus software for devices powered by other operating systems such as Windows.

Why we like it

Bitdefender Ultimate Security for MacOS detected 100% of threats when tested by AV-Test in December 2024. Furthermore, Bitdefender uses minimal resources, causing fewer slowdowns of standard programs and file transfers than other antivirus tools. It did slow down software installation, but the slowdown rate was on par with other third-party antivirus software for MacOS. This means your computer should run smoothly while Bitdefender is working. You can also use it to run manual scans and schedule scans, giving you more control over your security than XProtect.

Bitdefender protects against most common forms of malware, including ransomware (which holds your data hostage to extort money from you) and phishing (which induces you to share passwords and other sensitive information). You’ll also get AI-powered anti-scam features to help you identify potentially harmful emails, text messages, QR codes or website links.

The Bitdefender Ultimate Security package further protects you with numerous tools not included in XProtect. These include a VPN to keep your online activity private and adblocker software with anti-tracking protocols to prevent companies from stealing your data. Bitdefender’s VPN lacks advanced features found in our top-rated VPNs but there’s no built-in VPN for MacOS, so the Bitdefender VPN may be a good choice for budget-conscious casual VPN users. Bitdefender Ultimate Security also includes a password manager but its features are similar to Apple Password Manager, so this isn’t a huge draw.

You’ll also get identity protection that will monitor data leaks and inform you when your data has been found on the Dark Web so you can take action to protect your identity. Moreover, this protection can apply to up to five devices, including MacOS, iOS, Windows and Android devices.

US residents can spring for the higher-tier Bitdefender Ultimate Security packages to gain comprehensive protection against identity theft and financial fraud, including up to $2 million of identity theft protection. People with serious financial and identity theft concerns may benefit from upgrading but if you’re only interested in antivirus, the base plan works just fine.

Who it’s best for

Bitdefender Ultimate Security is your best choice if you’re looking for a full-service solution that protects every aspect of your online activity, not just the downloads monitored by typical antivirus software. US residents with significant assets may also consider Bitdefender Ultimate Security for its identity theft insurance. Additionally, multi-device users get protection for non-MacOS gadgets.

Pricing

Bitdefender Ultimate Security starts at $90 for the first year (renewing at $160 per year). This plan includes the core antivirus software with protection from ransomware, phishing and other online scams, plus basic identity tracking. More expensive Ultimate Security plans don’t add additional antivirus protections, just financial fraud protections, making them more appropriate for people concerned about stolen identities and asset monitoring.

The mid-tier Bitdefender Ultimate Security plan costs $120 for the first year (renews at $190 per year) and includes everything from the first plan plus identity theft protection with up to $1 million in insurance. You’ll also get credit monitoring and reporting tools for one credit bureau.

The highest-tier Bitdefender Ultimate Security package starts at $150 for the first year and renews at $250 per year. This plan includes everything from the second-tier plan plus identity theft insurance of up to $2 million, ransomware resolution and refund, credit monitoring with three credit bureaus and investment account alerts.

Norton’s antivirus also has minimal impact on system resources, with no detrimental effect on download speed and only mild effects on application speed and file transfer, so you won’t notice a major change in how your computer operates.

All Norton antivirus plans feature amenities you won’t find with XProtect, including cloud backup storage starting at 2GB and a password manager. However, MacOS features other programs with these benefits: iCloud, which offers 5GB of free cloud storage, and Apple Password Manager, which offers basic password creation and protection tools similar to the Norton equivalent. If you’re on a budget, you’ll be fine with Apple’s free security tools. But if you have more advanced needs or use non-Apple devices, Norton 360 can be a great choice.

You can spring for a more expensive Norton package to get a VPN, parental controls and privacy monitoring. Higher-tier plans also include identity theft protection and reimbursement for up to $25,000 of stolen funds. Moreover, Norton’s most expensive plan can protect up to 10 devices, five more than you’ll be able to protect with Bitdefender.

Who it’s best for

Norton 360 is your best bet if you’re looking for comprehensive antivirus protection and privacy monitoring for more than five devices. Parents will also love its parental controls. However, you might want to choose a different cybersecurity bundle if you have significant assets and you want more extensive identity theft insurance.

Pricing

Norton antivirus starts at $30 for the first year (renews at $60 per year) for the core antivirus, password manager and 2GB of cloud backups, with coverage for one device. Norton 360 Standard provides antivirus coverage for three devices, 50GB of cloud backups, dark web monitoring, a VPN and a password manager, costing $40 for the first year ($95 upon renewal). This is similar to the core Bitdefender plan, with the main difference being the addition of backups.

You’ll need to spring for the Norton 360 Lifelock plan, priced at $100 for the first year and $190 per year on renewal, to get coverage for 10 devices. This plan also includes 250GB of cloud backups, parental controls, credit monitoring and identity theft protection with stolen fund reimbursement of up to $25,000. These additional features are great, but you might be better off with Bitdefender Ultimate Security’s advanced plans if you have significant assets to protect.

Factors to consider in an antivirus for Mac

Effectiveness

Every antivirus company will say its product provides excellent protection but that’s not always true. You can figure out a tool’s real-world performance by looking at test results from third-party labs such as AV-Test. AV-Test runs quarterly tests on the most popular antivirus tools for MacOS, plus more regular testing on many Windows antivirus tools.

System resource use

Antivirus tools run continuously to protect you from malware and other suspicious digital activity. These processes should run in the background without noticeably slowing your computer down. Active scans will slow your computer down more, but they shouldn’t make it unusable.

Many antivirus tools offer free trials or money-back guarantees so you can test how they interact with your setup without making a long-term commitment.

Privacy

Antivirus software scans your downloads and compares them to company records, identifying and blocking anything that matches known malware. Antivirus tools connected to safe browsing tools may also monitor your online activity and email for potential threats such as phishing emails. This can create serious risk if a company isn’t anonymizing your data properly or, worse, is selling it.

You can learn about how a company anonymizes and otherwise protects your data by reading its privacy policy. We’ve also done our due diligence to make sure that the products recommended in these lists aren’t connected to any recent privacy breaches so you don’t have to spend hours researching these companies yourself.

Bundled services

Many antivirus tools come bundled with other security or privacy software, such as:

  • Ransomware protection
  • Phishing protection
  • Email scam detectors
  • Parental controls
  • Password managers
  • VPNs
  • Safe browsing extensions
  • Identity theft alerts and protection

Some of these tools may not be the best-in-class -- the VPNs are often lackluster compared to standalone options -- but they can provide a broad range of protection for casual users. You’ll also often save money if you choose a bundle instead of buying all of these tools separately. Choosing a bundle can also simplify your accounting, as keeping up with many subscriptions can be tricky and auto-renewals are easy to miss.

Cost and discounts

Many antivirus tools and security bundles offer an introductory discount of 50% or more for the first year. Your cost will shoot up -- often by as much as $100 per year -- when the contract renews. You’ll need to factor this into your long-term budgeting.

How we test antivirus

Our research process starts with analyzing antivirus companies’ websites to evaluate their features, bundled services and prices. If a company’s plans appear to provide a good range of features and bundled services for the price, we look at how the software performs in third-party testing from AV-Test. We also read reviews from industry experts and average users to get a feel for how the software performs inside and outside of a lab environment.

We are currently building a more hands-on in-house process for testing antivirus software. This list will be updated with test notes as relevant.

Other antivirus we tested

McAfee Plus Premium

McAfee has a history of providing high-quality antivirus protection for all types of devices. The McAfee Plus Premium plans also include a VPN, password manager, social media privacy manager and even identity theft protection (with insurance of up to $2 million), with coverage for unlimited devices. Most of these features are similar to what you’ll get with Bitdefender or Norton, although the ability to apply them to unlimited devices is an unusual bonus.

Unfortunately, there’s no recent AV-Test data for McAfee on MacOS devices. This makes it difficult to be certain of how effectively McAfee protects MacOS devices. McAfee’s VPN also doesn’t provide the highest privacy level or fastest speeds, although it can be effective for the average user.

McAfee Plus Premium starts at $50 for the first year and renews at $150 per year.

AVG Internet Security

AV-Test found that AVG Internet Security had a 100% malware detection rate in December 2024. AVG Internet Security also has a lower slowdown rate for standard and frequently used applications than the industry standard so you’ll be able to run core MacOS software smoothly. However, AVG causes more slowdown for file transfers, which could cause some frustration if you regularly transfer large files (such as videos) to or from your computer.

AVG Internet Security includes anti-phishing protocols and email protection for up to 10 devices. However, its safe browsing tools aren’t compatible with Safari. You also won’t get the full range of security tools offered by a cybersecurity package like Bitdefender Ultimate Security.

AVG Internet Security’s 10-device plan costs $60 for the first year and $100 per year on renewal.

You might already have the best antivirus for Mac

If you’re following general best practices for internet safety -- avoiding downloads or links from sources you don’t trust -- you’ll probably be fine with the built-in XProtect. However, you might want to choose Bitdefender Ultimate Security if you need identity theft protection and advanced parental controls or Norton 360 with Lifelock if you want antivirus coverage for more than five devices. If you have more advanced needs that aren’t covered by Apple’s built-in antivirus solution, you may benefit from a paid (or even free) third-party cybersecurity suite.
