If you’re taking a trip to Mexico but want privacy on public Wi-Fi, need to access your email while making it look like you're still in your home country or don’t want to miss out on your favorite streaming movies and shows, then you’ll want a virtual private network, or VPN. With a VPN, you can make it look like you’re in a different city, state or even country while you’re on holiday, therefore bypassing regional restrictions. For instance, you can access US Netflix and Disney Plus libraries while you’re in Mexico, so you can stream The Diplomat or The Woman in Cabin 10 from anywhere.

Our Picks

8.8/10 CNET Score

NordVPN is the best VPN for users who need blazing-fast speeds for 4K video streaming, competitive online gaming or lag-free Zoom calls. It also offers a handful of privacy-boosting options and some innovative features like Meshnet. While Express remains slightly ahead in privacy and transparency and other VPNs offer cheaper long-term prices, NordVPN still provides an impressive all-around service that continues to improve.

Pros

  • Blazing-fast internet speeds
  • Strong privacy and transparency
  • Great for streaming service unblocking
  • User-friendly apps

Cons

  • Inconsistent pricing structure

8.6/10 CNET Score

Surfshark is a solid option for anyone looking for a premium VPN experience for a cheaper price than ExpressVPN or NordVPN. Surfshark boasts an impressive roster of useful premium features that deliver a lot of value despite a recent renewal price hike. It can’t quite match NordVPN’s speed or ExpressVPN’s overall privacy position, but it comes remarkably close at a cheaper price. All in all, Surfshark is a top-notch VPN that demonstrates consistent improvement year after year.

Pros

  • Fast
  • Unlimited simultaneous connections
  • RAM-only server infrastructure
  • Lots of unique features
  • Split tunneling on Windows, Android, MacOS and iOS

Cons

  • 14-Eyes jurisdiction (Netherlands)
  • Major renewal price increase

Likewise, you can access websites and use apps as though you were in your home country by using a VPN server based in that area. A VPN can even help you avoid throttling on mobile networks that slow down certain types of traffic, like streaming video. Because of their many uses, VPNs are excellent travel companions to install on all of your devices.

What is the best VPN for Mexico right now?

ExpressVPN is the top VPN for Mexico due to its ability to unblock almost any site while offering privacy protection and lightning-fast speeds. We like the ExpressVPN is incredibly user-friendly for everyone from VPN beginners to privacy enthusiasts. It's a great all-around VPN for basic privacy while browsing the web to accessing region-restricted streaming videos and advanced privacy needs. Granted, it’s the most expensive option on this list, but the overall intuitive app design and top-notch privacy make Express worth it.

ExpressVPN is a top-notch VPN provider that demonstrates a steadfast commitment to privacy and transparency. It’s a safe choice for privacy-conscious VPN users, and also a fantastic option for casual users because it’s extremely simple to use, fast and excellent for streaming. With VPN servers in all 50 of the United States, ExpressVPN is a great option for folks who need to access regional content -- like streaming NFL games or professional soccer matches -- from the US while abroad in Mexico or traveling within the US.

Why we like it

With ExpressVPN, you’ll get a simple interface and consistent user experience across platforms, making ExpressVPN an ideal choice for beginners. Apps are available for Windows, MacOS, Android, iOS, Apple TV, Android TV, Fire TV Stick and even a newly released GUI app for Linux. ExpressVPN’s streaming performance is impressive. We were able to access content from popular streaming sites like Netflix, Disney Plus, Hulu, Max and Amazon Prime Video across all devices we tested.

You’ll want fast speeds for streaming and other data-heavy activities like gaming and torrenting. Thankfully, ExpressVPN delivers. We measured an 18% average speed loss in our latest speed tests with ExpressVPN, which represented significant improvement over our previous testing. The provider was able to remedy some recent speed woes with a couple of inventive solutions on both Lightway and OpenVPN protocols on its latest Windows app.

If you have heightened privacy needs, you’ll appreciate ExpressVPN’s approach to transparency and user privacy. The provider leads the industry with 23 independent audits since 2018 and sets a standard by consistently rolling out innovative privacy improvements. ExpressVPN has kept pace with post-quantum security standards and integrated ML-KEM into the Lightway protocol to beef up its post-quantum protections. IP Shuffle is another helpful feature that works in the background and changes your IP address each time you load a website, which helps make it even more difficult to track you online. ExpressVPN’s kill switch works as advertised and we encountered no leaks in our latest tests. The VPN employs industry-standard AES 256-bit and ChaCha20 encryption with its Lightway protocol and also supports OpenVPN and IKEv2 protocols. Its TrustedServer technology takes the RAM-only server infrastructure to the next level by reinstalling the entire server stack in addition to wiping any data with every reboot.

ExpressVPN is a well-rounded VPN and one of the very best you can buy. But the catch is that you’ll pay a premium. The monthly subscription plan starts at $13 per month, which is pretty standard across the industry. The yearly subscription begins at $75 for the first 15 months, while the two-year plan costs $98 total for the first 28 months (the one- and two-year plans renew at $100 annually). Those prices are approximately in line with what its closest competitor, NordVPN, charges: $13 per month, $60 for the first year or $81 for the first two years combined (the one- and two-year plans renew at $140 per year). Other top VPNs like Surfshark and Proton VPN are considerably cheaper -- Surfshark costs $48 for the first year while Proton VPN charges $60 for the first year, with both providers renewing at $80 annually. ExpressVPN offers a seven-day free trial, followed by a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you have the opportunity to try the service before buying or fully committing.

Why we like it

NordVPN is the fastest VPN we tested by a long shot, with a best-in-class 3% average internet download speed loss -- its closest competitor was Proton at 16% speed loss. In our testing, we found NordVPN an excellent choice for streaming, with effortless unblocking of foreign Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney Plus and Max libraries. Additionally, we had no issues watching BBC iPlayer, CBC Gem, Hulu, Crunchyroll and several other regional streaming services. Coupled with fast speeds, its excellent region-restricted content unblocking makes Nord one of the best VPNs for streaming.

With a sizable roster of 8,000-plus servers peppering 126 countries, NordVPN is excellent for international travel and streaming -- its global reach is slightly more than Surfshark and ExpressVPN. Its 10-device simultaneous device allowance is excellent for power users with many devices. While some providers, like Surfshark and PIA, offer unlimited simultaneous device policies, Nord’s rivals Proton VPN and ExpressVPN match its 10, which should be fine for most folks.

We like that NordVPN’s strong privacy chops go beyond the basics. Alongside the industry-standard NordLynx (WireGuard-based) and OpenVPN VPN protocols, Nord offers its proprietary obfuscation-oriented NordWhisper, which tries to masquerade as traditional web traffic to try slipping through firewalls. NordWhisper could be helpful in situations like on school Wi-Fi, when the network you’re on doesn’t play nicely with VPNs. You’ll get double VPN (which uses a second VPN connection) and Onion over VPN servers (which use Tor) to make it even more difficult to trace your traffic back to its source compared to a standard VPN connection. Meshnet lets you create a virtual local network of PCs, mobile devices and streaming devices for secure file sharing, hosting LAN parties or accessing services like Netflix without pesky multi-factor authentication.

Initially, NordVPN is a great value at $13 per month, $60 for the first year or $81 total for the first two years. However, the one- and two-year plans renew at an astronomical $140 per year, which is considerably more than the $79 to $80 that Surfshark and Proton VPN renew for, but in the same ballpark as ExpressVPN. Although you can avoid a pricey renewal price hike by stacking subscriptions, we’d like to see Nord’s pricing model be more transparent. Despite its high renewal price, NordVPN is a superb VPN for everyone from streaming fanatics to folks with critical privacy needs.

Why we like it

Surfshark’s apps are slick, simple to use and deliver a consistent user experience across platforms, including Windows, MacOS, Linux, Android, iOS, Apple TV, Fire TV and Android TV. Streaming enthusiasts will appreciate that Surfshark does a good job of unblocking content on most platforms and streaming services and that it offers apps for smart TVs as well as streaming devices. Other than a few minor hiccups, Surfshark’s streaming experience was solid, which we would expect from a top-tier VPN service, and it offers unlimited simultaneous connections while most VPNs limit you to 10 or fewer.

We’re impressed with Surfshark’s consistently fast speeds over the past few years, with an average speed loss hovering in the high-teens. We measured an average speed loss of 21% in our 2025 speed tests -- which is technically slower than previous years, but shouldn’t result in a noticeable difference in practice. Surfshark’s network of over 3,200 servers across 100 countries is large, but somewhat smaller than those provided by ExpressVPN (105 countries), Proton VPN (126 countries) and NordVPN (126 countries). A large network of servers like what Surfshark offers can help ensure fast speeds and stable connections by minimizing congestion and offering more options for more users to connect to servers nearby their physical location.

In addition to standard privacy protections like its kill switch, no-logs policy and DNS leak protection, Surfshark includes a few unique features that help it stand out from the pack. Dynamic Multihop lets you tunnel through any two server locations of your choosing for an added layer of privacy, and Rotating IP switches your IP address every few minutes, making it harder to track you online. Surfshark’s Alternative ID lets you create an alter-ego complete with full name, physical address, and email address that you can use online without divulging your true identity.

Following the lead of other VPN providers, including ExpressVPN, Mullvad and NordVPN, Surfshark rolled out post-quantum protections this year to guard against potential future threats from quantum computers. Even though Surfshark is still playing catch-up in terms of transparency, we’re encouraged by company representatives telling us that a no-logs audit has been commissioned for this year (its first since 2022) and that the company is committing to annual third-party audits.

While Surfshark’s $15.45 per month rate makes it one of the most expensive monthly subscription prices in the industry, pricing for its longer-term plans is reasonable. The yearly plan costs $48 for the 15 months, while the 27-month plan costs $54 total for the first two years combined (the one- and two-year plans renew at $79 annually). Surfshark’s renewal prices increased this year, but its overall pricing is still significantly cheaper than ExpressVPN’s $75 for the first 15 months or $98 total for the 28 months years (the one- and two-year plans renew at $100 annually), as well as NordVPN’s $60 for the first year or $81 total for the first two years (both renewing at $140 annually). Like many other VPNs, Surfshark offers a 30-day money-back guarantee in case you’re not satisfied with the service.

Other VPNs we tested

CyberGhost

CyberGhost caught our eye since it has a generous server network in Mexico -- 50 servers in Mexico City -- and a vast selection in the US. It also has specialized streaming servers that bring out the best quality for dozens of US streaming services. It has an easy-to-use interface that makes it an excellent choice for simple usage at $13 per month, $42 every six months or $57 total for the first two years (then $57 annually). Despite these great features, we don’t recommend using CyberGhost as it produces uneven internet speed results and, in our testing, its apps were buggy.

Read our CyberGhost review.

Private Internet Access

PIA is a surprisingly great VPN because it has over 50 US servers for excellent United States coverage. Despite the extensive US network, PIA has only one Mexico server. This means connecting to a local IP could cause significant speed reductions or even disconnections due to overcrowding. It’s an acceptable option if you just need to connect to a home IP in the US to access different sites, but its uneven internet download speed loss makes PIA one of the more sluggish VPNs we tested.

How we test VPNs

We hand-tested VPNs in the US and researched servers to find the best one for Mexico. During our testing, the most important features we looked for were robust privacy features, security options, server network and location availability, bypassing geo-restrictions and more.

For example, we tested security by checking for IP or DNS leaks. We found ExpressVPN to be one of our most secure VPNs thanks to its TrustedServer technology, automatic kill switch, verified no-logs policy audited by another party and split tunneling.

Other VPNs stood out since we searched for more than just security potential. NordVPN is a super fast VPN with the most Mexican server locations, so you can get local news without risking your data.

Factors to consider in a VPN for Mexico

After testing multiple VPNs, we found the best features to narrow down when looking for the best VPN out of hundreds of options.

Privacy

No matter your reason for getting a VPN, privacy should always be your first consideration when deciding which one to download. VPNs with a no-logs policy (and third-party audited), reliable kill switch, DNS protection and friendly country of origin will protect you the best.

Servers

For this article, we narrowed down VPNs with various Mexico and US servers. However, VPNs with a large server network (with many servers and multiple locations) will provide more connection options no matter where you are.

Streaming capabilities

If you plan on traveling, looking for a VPN with features to access geo-restricted content should be high on your list. Most websites have software that detects if you’re using a VPN and will block you from seeing its content, especially if you’re streaming from another location. VPNs like ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Surfshark, and more can easily bypass geo-restrictions, whether you’re looking to watch Netflix’s US library while in Mexico or trying to stream from a site unavailable in the country.

Speed

Your VPN’s speeds must be fast enough to keep a reliable connection to the server (slow speeds will cause frequent disconnection) and fast enough to stream content. A top VPN -- Like NordVPN -- will give you a minimal speed reduction to stream from Netflix and other sites in UHD.

Price

You’ll want to research each VPN and see if the features each one offers provide a good enough value for the price. On top of that, we tested VPNs, which have money-back guarantees, so you can get a refund within a certain amount of time if you aren’t 100% satisfied. If you’re on a budget, there are cheap VPN alternatives.

Best VPNs for Mexico FAQs

How do I get a Mexico IP address?

To get a Mexico IP address, you’ll need to download a VPN that offers server locations in Mexico. Every VPN on this list has servers in Mexico and will give you an IP once you connect to one of these servers, whether you’re in Mexico or the US.

Are VPNs legal in Mexico?

VPNs are 100% legal to use in Mexico. Although Mexico has strong protections against censorship, there’s nothing wrong with using a VPN to protect your privacy and data from being observed by third parties while visiting. But remember, using a VPN to commit illegal activities is still illegal.

Can I use a free VPN in Mexico?

You can use a free VPN while visiting Mexico, but I don’t recommend it. Even if you’re just looking for a simple product only to hide your IP, free VPNs typically use your data to sell to make up for the costs or bombard you with advertisements. Free VPNs aren’t as reliable as premium VPNs. They will either limit your bandwidth, have limited servers (so many may not even have locations in Mexico) or just be disguised as a VPN to get you to download malicious content.

If you must use a free VPN, we recommend Proton VPN. Its unlimited free tier lets you stream your favorite Netflix content from its US library while in Mexico. However, the free VPN lacks a Mexico server and will lower speeds because it must connect to a server farther away.
