Tired of Price Hikes? How to Cancel Your Netflix Subscription

Netflix is about to get more expensive. Is it time to end your streaming subscription for good?

If you're a Netflix subscriber, expect your monthly subscription plan to increase in price very soon.

On Tuesday, Netflix said it's raising the prices for nearly every one of its streaming subscription tiers in the US and Canada. The following Netflix subscription plans that are increasing in price:

  • Standard (with ads): from $7 to $8 per month
  • Standard (no ads): from $15 to $18 per month
  • Premium: from $23 to $25 per month

These new prices are expected to go into effect during your next billing cycle. 

And this is all despite Netflix having a record year in 2024, including adding 19 million new subscribers in the fourth quarter (the most ever in a quarter) and having what it called "the most-streamed sporting event ever" with the Jake Paul versus Mike Tyson fight. You'd think that with Netflix doing so well, it wouldn't need to resort to price hikes, but here we are.

Since 2018, Netflix has increased its prices four times.

And where I am, personally, is that I don't feeling like paying even more for my Netflix account. I did enjoy watching season 2 of Squid Game, but not enough to continuously pay more for my subscription year after year, not to mention paying for all my other streaming subscriptions like Apple Music, Hulu, Max and so on.

If you don't want to pay more for your Netflix subscription this year, you might want to cancel your plan. Here's how.

How to cancel your Netflix subscription

To cancel your Netflix subscription, go to netflix.com/cancelplan and sign in with your email address and password (if you're not already signed in). This takes you to the page you see below, where you'll have three options:

  • Cancel. This option permanently cancels your plan. You will no longer have access to your account.
  • Pause for a month. This lets you keep your account without paying, but you won't be able to watch anything until you resume.
  • Change plan. You can downgrade your account to pay less.

Hit the Cancel box and then tap or click on Finish Cancellation to cancel your Netflix account. You will still be able to watch your favorite shows and movies until your next billing date.

Cancelling your Netflix account

You can easily uncancel your account at https://www.netflix.com/account.

However, if you pay for your Netflix through a third party, like a wireless carrier, you'll need to contact that company in order to have your Netflix subscription stopped.
